Harlem Library

July 11, 2018

Today is the Community Appreciation Summer Fun Event at the library from 2:00-6:00 P.M. This open house is hosted by the Friends of the Harlem Library. Refreshments will be served and you may sign up to win a door prize - one for adults and one for children. Jack Young, Harlem’s high school history teacher and library board member, will be at the library from 4:00-6:00 selling and signing his new book “Down Range.” Don’t miss this chance to congratulate Jack and get your very own copy. Bring a friend and stop in at the library!

The Book Challenge for July is to read a book from a genre you don’t usually read.

In the good old summertime relax with a great book! We have many new titles to choose from. Three summer reads you will enjoy are “By Invitation Only” by Dorothea Benton Frank, “The High Tide Club” by Mary Kay Andrews, and “The Perfect Couple” by Elin Hilderbrand.

“Wild Montana” features Montana wildlife captured by photographer Donald M. Jones. Jones has photos of creatures from three habitat zones: lush forests, craggy mountains, and open plains. The entertaining and informative captions will add to the enjoyment of experiencing Montana’s beauty through the lens of Jones’ camera.

Jennifer Zeynab Joukhadar is the writer of “The Map of Salt and Stars.” After Nour’s father dies to cancer her mother moves Nour and her sisters from New York City back to Syria to be near family. But Syria is changing and soon Nour and her family find themselves surrounded by war. They must choose between staying amid the violence or fleeing across seven countries of the Middle East and Africa in search of safety.

“After Anna” is by bestselling author Lisa Scottoline. Dr. Noah Alderman’s wife has died and he and his young son find happiness again when he remarries Maggie. She is happy, too, except for the fact that she hasn’t seen her teenage daughter, Anna, since she was a baby. One day Anna calls and Maggie gets a second chance to be her mother. Soon things take turn for the worse, even though Maggie chooses to ignore the red flags. Anna is murdered and Noah is tried for the crime. As Maggie is forced to face the possibility her husband is the murderer she searches for the truth which may be darker than she ever imagined.

“Cloudbursts” is a collection of thirty-eight short stories including new pieces and works from former collections by master of the short story: Thomas McGuane of McLeod, Montana. In this collection the stories move “from hilarious to the tragic and back again.”

New nonfiction titles include “The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How to Fix It” by W. Chris Winter, MD; “Our 50-State Border Crisis: How the Mexican Border Fuels the Drug Epidemic Across America” by Howard G. Buffet; and “Note to Self: Inspiring Words from Inspiring People” collected by Gayle King.

The Summer Reading program continues through July. Children are reminded to bring in their reading record sheets to earn prizes and enter the drawings for the grand prizes. The Readers Club meets on Thursdays at 1:00 P.M. for grade school children. The preschool program and Lego Club will not meet the rest of the summer. Adults may participate in the “Letter by Letter” game until the end of August.
