The Chinook Sugarbeeter volleyball team improved to a perfect 5-0 in District 6C-East play after sweeping the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks 25-13, 26-24, 25-13 Friday evening.

Saturday the girls dropped a three set match to the Fort Benton Longhorns, 25-20, 25-22, 25-16 to fall to 6-2 overall.

Friday in Chester the 'Beeters started fast collecting 13 kills in the opening set as they raced out to a big lead early to take the opening set 25-13.

The Hawks rallied a bit in set number two but the Sugarbeeters were able to come together as a team and hold on for a 26-24 win.

The Sugarbeeters wasted little time ensuring that the match would need no more than three sets as another fast start led to a 25-13 third set win and sweep in the match.

Senior Kourtney Hanson paced the attack with 17 kills in the match. Sophomore Ginger Hauer set up the hitters with 17 assists in the win.

The 'Beeter defense was balanced again as they dug up 46 balls with all nine players recording at least two. Senior Lincy Johnson led the team with nine while senior Rachel Gunderson collected eight.

"It was good to get another conference win under our belt. We met our goals of serving above 90% and as a team we hit .220, which means that we are doing a better job of keeping our offensive attacks in the opponents court and either gaining the kill or creating chaos for the opponents defense. The kids worked very hard this week in practice on those particular skills. It was rewarding to watch that hard work pay off as they achieved their goals," stated head coach Paula Molyneaux.

Saturday the girls hosted the Fort Benton Longhorns in a non-conference clash.

The Longhorns controlled the attack from the start and the 'Beeter offense had trouble maintaining any momentum throughout the match leading to a 3-0 sweep by Fort Benton.

Chinook dropped the opening set 25-20 and appeared to be ready to break through in set number two, but unforced errors kept the rally short in a 25-22 loss.

The Longhorns carried the momentum into the third set winning the finale 25-16.

Chinook was led offensively by Hanson's eight kills. Hauer's ten assists also led the team while she dug up a team high nine balls.

hinook senior Rachel Gunderson looks for an opening in the Fort Benton defense during second set action Saturday night.

"Disappointing loss for us, but just because we know Fort Benton is a good team and we wanted to beat them. The team played hard and executed our game plan. However we had too many unforced errors in service errors and reception errors. We also gave them too many free balls. Fort Benton has a lot of offensive fire power. And they won the net game on that night. We will go back to work this week and hopefully get to see them again in the September 29 tourney," concluded Molyneaux.

Chinook will host Big Sandy this Thursday in their Homecoming match and then travel to Fort Benton Saturday for the Longhorn's mid-season tournament.
