Sugarbeeters keep rolling, beat Malta 3-2 and sweep Thunderbirds

The Chinook Sugarbeeters picked up a spirited 3-2 non-conference win over the Malta M-ettes last Tuesday night in Chinook and then welcomed the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds to town Friday in District 6C-East action. Chinook swept the Thunderbirds to remain undefeated in conference play at 7-0 and improve to 9-2 overall.

The Sugarbeeters fell to the M-ettes early in the season and were looking to earn a season split when they hosted Malta last Tuesday.

The Sugarbeeters came to play from the get go taking an early lead and holding on for a 25-20 opening set win.

Set number two saw the 'Beeters record 15 kills but that wasn't enough as it was the M-ettes that were able to even the match at 1-1-.

Set number three still had the momentum in favor of the visitors. Malta was able to eek out a 25-22 set win to go up 2-1 in the match.

These Sugarbeeters are resilient and turned the momentum back in there favor with a resounding 25-14 fourth set win to push the match to the a fifth and deciding set.

Chinook was dominant early and never let the Mustangs get anything going, cruising to a 15-3 match clinching win to top the M-ettes 3-2 and split the season series.

Senior Kourtney Hanson had a huge effort for the Sugarbeeters, slamming home 29 kills in the win while also serving up three aces to power the offensive attack. Hanson also protected the net with eight blocks for the 'Beeters in the win.

Sophomore Ginger Hauer set up the hitters with 30 assists. Senior Lincy Johnson helped secure the back row and keep the possession for the offense with 18 digs in the win.

"I was very pleased with our offensive and defensive game. We really finished the last two sets strong in both of those areas," stated head coach Paula Molyneaux. "Although it was a non-conference game, it was a great victory for our team. Malta has a good program, and our battle this season has been back and forth.

The win will help the team moving forward, "Playing well and winning the last meeting between us, provided a good base for confidence as we move forward into three huge conference matches this coming week vs North Star, Box Elder and CJI," said Molyneaux.

Friday in Chinook the Sugarbeeters added another conference win to remain undefeated and improve to 7-0 with a 25-8, 25-4, 25-6 win over the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds.

Senior Megan Molyneaux recorded six Kills in the win. Hanson had nine Aces and Hauer recorded 12 assists.

"Hays did a good job of hustling to keep the ball alive and our goal was not to let anything hit the floor. It is a very satisfying night when all 13 team members can contribute to a win," concluded Molyneaux.
