November 28, 2018

The Winter Sports season is finally upon us and with that comes the start of the High School Basketball and Wrestling seasons.

The Turner Tornado girls and boys basketball teams will be in action this Friday and Saturday in Glasgow at the Class C Showcase.

The girls will begin play Friday at Noon when they take the Scobey Spartans. Saturday they will face The North Country Mavericks at 3:00 p.m.

The Turner boys will tip off at 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon against the Frazer Bearcubs. The Tornadoes will be back on the court Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to take on the Lustre Christian Lions.

Turner Girls Basketball

While the majority of the state and the rest of the District 9C will wait until the following week to begin their seasons. The Tornadoes will get a jump on the pack with a pair of games over the weekend.

The Turner girls have been steadily building their program over the past few years posting winning records the past three seasons. The girls also earned a trip to the Northern C Divisional after earning a third place finish at the District 9C Tournament last February.

Turner proved they belonged at the Northern C , winning two games in the tournament. As the 2018-19 season gets underway the Tornadoes have their sights set firmly on a return trip to Great Falls come February.

The Tornadoes finished with a 16-10 overall record a season ago and look to add a few more W's to the win column this season.

Turner returns a bevy of talent led by junior Sarah Billmayer who earned First Team District 9C All-Conference honors a season ago. Also back this season is sophomore standout Shyan Krass, who garnered District 9C Second Team All-Conference recognition for her play in the post.

Seniors Raegan Conlan and Rylee Conlan are back for their fifth season with the Tornadoes. Both played extensively as eighth graders and have cemented themselves as leaders on and off the court for the squad.

Also providing senior leadership will be Melanie Watkins, a key contributor a season ago.

Sophomores Brandy Calvert and Brooke Reed are back and all three played big rolls a season ago as freshman. Freshman looking to step into bigger rolls for the team include Laci Maloney and Lacey Hickel. New to the team this season is eighth grader Dakota Krass.

This season the girls will be under the direction of Head Coach Julie Welsh. Darci Ammen will be back as an assistant.

Turner Boys Basketball

The Turner Tornado boys basketball team came on strong to close out the 2017-18 season and look to carry some of that momentum heading into the 2018-19 season.

Zach Holland again will lead the boys and will be assisted by Dylan Welsch. Turner finished 9-12 a season ago and were very competitive at the District 9C Tournament, winning one game.

Leading the Tornadoes will be seniors Kurt Calvert, Cody Welsh and Tracer Heilig. All three played major roles a season ago and Welsh earned 1st Team District 9C All-Conference honors.

Welsh led the team in scoring a season ago and will again look to me a major contributor on both sides of the ball.

Jack Harmon is the only junior on the roster and will look to make a impact for the team this year after gaining valuable experience as a sophomore.

Sophomores out this year are Austin Welsh, Shane Kimmel and Spencer See. All three will be counted on as the team looks to build depth on the court.

Freshman are Trevor Kimmel and Shay Humphreys. Playing a season ago as eighth graders will certainly help them contribute more to the teams success this year.

Joining the team for their first experience of Varsity basketball will be eighth graders Charlie Calvert and Chantry Jorgenson.

The Tornadoes will look to turn some heads this year and make a little noise in the very tough District 9C.

Both the girls and boys will take a week off after the Class C Showcase in Glasgow, returning to the court December 14th when they will make their home debut in a District 9C contest against the North Star Knights.

The teams will then hit the road for three straight contests as they will face the Fort Benton Longhorns on December 15th, the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks on December 20 and they will close out 2018 in Dodson against the Coyotes.

Turner will take the court for the first time in 2019 when they host the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds on January 4th.

The Tornadoes will honor their seasons in their final regular season contest of the year, February 7th against the Box Elder Bears.

The District 9C Tournament will take place in Havre, February 13-16 at the Havre High School Gymnasium. The top three teams at the District 9C will head to the Northern C Divisional in Great Falls, February 20-23. From their the top two teams will advance to the State Tournament.
