Chinook sophomore Ethan Bell gets a layup after forcing a steal in third quarter action of the 'Beeters 77-19 win over Turner on Saturday night.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters boys basketball team got 2019 off to a fast start as they opened up with a pair of wins over the Harlem Wildcats, 79-45 on Thursday and the Turner Tornadoes 77-19 Saturday night. The Hays Lodge Pole Thunderbirds also picked up a win to begin 2019. The Thunderbirds got off to a slow start but finished fast in a 91-61 win over Turner. Saturday night in Fort Benton the Thunderbirds are unable to keep the momentum going and fell to the Longhorns 66-30. The Harlem Wildcats bounced back Friday night with a thrilling 69-66 win over the Glasgow Scottie's to solidify their hold on the number three spot in the District 2B.

The Sugarbeeters have been impressive thus far, having put on the court an offense that can score from all five positions and a defense that is connected at all times. The 'Beeters have had a very balanced scoring attack to start the season with four to five players scoring in double figures each night. The first games of 2019 were no different as the 'Beeters took on the Harlem Wildcats and Turner Tornadoes.

Thursday in Harlem, Chinook senior Brendan Edwards scored the first points of the game off a nice pass from junior Hunter Neibauer for a quick 2-0 lead, but the Wildcats quickly responded as freshman RJ Ramone evened the score at 2-2. The 'Beeter defense then forced a 5-second call and senior Cord Schneider scored off a pass from Edwards. A Neibauer steal led to another basket and then moments later Edwards scored again off a pass from senior Isaac Bell for an 8-2 Chinook lead.

'Beeter senior Riley Kellam got in on the action with a theft of his own that led to a pair of free throws on the other end and sophomore Ethan Bell forced a turnover and found senior Trajan Hannum for another easy bucket to keep the Chinook offense rolling.

Edwards scored again off another pass from Schneider and Neibauer converted another steal into a lay up late in the opening quarter. Ethan Bell made a nice move to get to the basket for another score helping Chinook secure a 23 to 10 lead at the end of one quarter.

The 'Beeters continued to play well in the second quarter, getting baskets from Schneider, Ethan Bell, and Isaac Bell to go with a steal and layup from senior James Christensen as Chinook extended their lead to 35-21 midway through the second quarter.

Neibauer followed with another bucket off an offensive rebound. The 'Beeters controlled the offensive glass and began to pile up the rebounds.

Chinook closed the half with Christensen, Ethan Bell and Brenden Edwards scoring to give Chinook a 45-21 halftime lead.

The Sugarbeeters and Wildcats matched each other step for step for much of the second half, resulting in a 79-45 Chinook win.

Ethan Bell and Edwards each finished with 13 points, Isaac Bell, Neibauer and Kellam each scored 10 and Schneider finished with nine.

The 'Beeters cleaned the glass for 50 rebounds, led by Schneider's 13 and Edwards 12. Chinook recorded 18 steals on the night, led by Christiansen and Edwards with five each.

The Wildcats were paced by freshman Tyler Cichosz's 13 points. Freshman RJ Ramone added nine for the Wildcats.

Saturday the Sugarbeeters welcomed the Turner Tornadoes to the Floyd Bowen gymnasium. Chinook's offense was operating on all cylinders and their defense was stifling from the get go.

Neibauer scored just seconds in after controlling the opening tip. After a steal the 'Beeters quickly scored again as Edwards scored at the basket. Neibauer forced another steal and then found Hannum from a three point bomb to put Chinook up 9-0 at the 5:53 mark of the first.

Neibauer scored right after a Turner time out, knocking down a triple of his own. The 'Beeters forced turnovers on back to back Tornado possession and got baskets from Schneider and Neibauer.

Isaac Bell followed with another long three to keep the offense rolling. Bell quickly turned a steal into another 'Beeter score and then followed with an emphatic one handed slam after another steal to put Chinook on top 24-0.

The 'Beeters would finish the first quarter with a 33-1 lead and then take a 54-9 lead into intermission.

Chinook slowed things down a bit in the second half and secured a 77-19 win over the Tornadoes.

The 'Beeters were balanced offensively as Neibauer led the effort with 12 points. Hannum added 11, including 3-3 from beyond the arc. Edwards also scored 11 and Isaac Bell and Schneider each finished with 10.

The 'Beeters recorded 23 assists in the win, led by Isaac's eight.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds visited the Turner Tornadoes Friday night in what turned out to be a very entertaining contest.

Senior Gilbert Snow started the scoring with a put back off an offensive rebound. Turner junior Jack Harmon evened the score by converting a nice pass from sophomore Shane Kimmel into a basket and a 2-2 tie.

The Thunderbirds then got three point baskets from senior Jeremy Pretty Paint and senior Moke Cliff to help open up a 16-5 Thunderbird lead at the 4:16 mark of the first quarter.

The Tornadoes would respond in a big way following a timeout by head coach Zach Holland. Senior Tracer Heilig converted an offensive rebound into points, sophomore Austin Welsh finished with the left hand after a nice dribble drive to cut the lead to 16-9.

Kimmel then knocked down a fifteen foot pull up jumper and knocked down a long three for the Tornadoes. Heilig finished the quarter at the charity stripe where he knocked down a pair of attempts to knot the game at 16-16 heading into the second quarter.

The Tornadoes maintained the momentum to start the second with Welsh converting another left handed layup and Harmon knocking down a triple of his own to give the Tornadoes a 21-16 lead.

Thunderbird senior Ken Blackcrow would end the 16-0 Turner run with a pair of free throws. Welsh answered right back for the Tornadoes to give Turner a 23-18 lead.

The Thunderbird offense began to heat up and they closed the half out strong. Snow scored on back to back possessions and Blackcrow gave Hays/L.P. back the lead for good, 26-25 moments later.

Blackcrow scored again on the ensuing possession. Pretty Paint added a bucket of a turnover and then scored inside for a 32-35 lead. Welsh did his best to keep Turner within reach scoring twice but after a Blackcrow jumper Hays/Lodge Pole had opened up a 41-30 advantage.

Senior Desmond Shambo scored at the buzzer to give the Thunderbirds a 43-30 lead at the break.

Baskets from Pretty Paint and Shambo extended the Thunderbird lead to 59-43 midway through the third quarter.

Kimmel did his best to keep Turner within striking distance converting an old fashioned three point play and draining a long three at the third quarter horn. Kimmel scored 21 points in the quarter but the Thunderbirds held a 69-52 lead heading into the fourth quarter of action.

The Thunderbirds continued to get up and down the court, scoring 22 points down the stretch in securing a 91-61 win over the Thunderbirds.

Hays/Lodge Pole had four players in double figures, led by Pretty Paint with 17, Shambo added 15 and Stiffarm and Blackcrow each finished with 12 points.

The Tornadoes were led by Kimmel with 34 in the contest, including two from long range and 8-10 from the free throw line. Welsh added 11 for the Tornadoes in the contest.

Saturday in Glasgow the Scotties to the lead early and held a 22-14 advantage over the Harlem Wildcats as the teams headed to the second quarter. Harlem would trim a point off the Scottie lead but still trailed 35-28 at the break.

Freshman RJ Ramone ignited the Wildcat offense in the third quarter by knocking down three from beyond the arc and scoring 15 in the stanza. Glasgow still held a lead though, 53-47 with eight minutes to go.

Ramone added another triple in the fourth and scored seven points while Cichosz added seven helping the Wildcats outscore Glasgow 22-13 down the stretch and secure a hard fought 69-66 win.

Ramone led the Wildcat effort with 35 points while senior Lane Allen added 18. Daniel Lawrence finished with nine for the Wildcats
