Sugarbeeters edge T-Birds 62-49, blast Big Sandy for 20th straight home win

January 23, 2019

Chinook sophomore Reese Elliot scores an easy bucket against the Big Sandy Pioneers at home Saturday evening.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters, now ranked No.7 in the latest Class C Boys Basketball Power Poll, had another solid week on the court defeating a talented Hays/Lodge Pole team 62-49 Friday.

Saturday the Sugarbeeters were at home looking for the season sweep against the Big Sandy Pioneers and did just that, winning 70-39 to improve to 9-0 in District 9C play and 12-0 overall. The 'Beeters win over the Pioneers was also the teams 20th straight win at home.

Saturday night in Chester the Thunderbirds steadily built their lead in picking up a 59-48 win over the Hawks.

The Harlem Wildcats fell to the Malta Mustangs of Friday 56-38 and were defeated by the Wolves in Wolf Point on Saturday 63-42.

The Turner Tornadoes were on the road Friday taking on the North Star Knights in Gildford where they were defeated 61-51. Saturday at home against the Fort Benton Longhorns, they again played hard but fell 62-47.

Anytime the Sugarbeeters and Thunderbird boys basketball teams meet on the court fans are always in for a treat.

The two teams, regardless of record, seem to play intense, high spirited basketball whenever they get together. Friday was no exception.

The Thunderbirds scored the first point of the contest on a free throw from senior Jeffrey Stiffarm. Chinook senior Cord Schneider responded on the other end to give Chinook its first lead 2-1.

T-Bird senior Kyle Young Jr. answered right back with a long three as fans began to settle into another tight contest.

Senior Isaac Bell found senior Brendan Edwards inside for a score and then on the next 'Beeter possession hit Kellam down low for another bucket and a 6-4 Sugarbeeter advantage.

Kellam scored again moments later for the 'Beeters and Stiffarm responded with and old fashioned three point play to give the T-Birds their third lead of the game, 9-8.

Schneider closed out the first quarter with a nice move on the block and senior Trajan Hannum found Edwards for a 12-9 Chinook lead.

Schneider began the second with a nice dish to Bell for a bucket and a 14-11 lead. Bell added another score on the next trip down the court and the Thunderbirds responded with Young finding Snow for a bucket to trim the 'Beeter advantage to 16-13.

Young then evened the contest at 16-16 with a long three for the Thunderbirds.

Senior James Christensen corralled an offensive rebound and scored to give the 'Beeters an 18-16 advantage.

Again Young answered right back to even the score at 18-18. Chinook sophomore Ethan Bell knocked down a seven footer for the 'Beeters only to see Stiffarm match his effort on the other end for the Thunderbirds.

Hays/Lodge Pole started to string a few possessions together late in the second half and after baskets from Pretty Paint and Blackcrow, Young knocked down another triple for a 29-24 Thunderbird lead.

Schneider then scored four straight for the 'Beeters to bring them back within one, 29-28. Stiffarm closed out the half with another basket to give the Thunderbirds a 32-29 halftime lead.

The Thunderbirds pushed their advantage to five with a Blackcrow bucket to start the third quarter and made it seven, 35-28 after a basket from Pretty Paint.

The 'Beeters turned to sophomore Reese Elliot for a spark and he provided it. Elliot converted back to back offensive rebounds into pints to trim the Thunderbird advantage to 35-32.

Bell scored in transition for the 'Beeters and Elliot scored again off an offensive board to give Chinook back the lead 36-35.

Snow took the lead right back for the Thunderbirds with a bucket on the other end. Kellam scored seconds later off a nice pass from Bell.

Elliot added another score and then turned a defensive rebound quickly into an outlet to Christensen who then found Bell behind the arc for a triple and a 44-37 'Beeter advantage.

The Thunderbirds weren't about to lay down and cut the lead back to two, 44-42 after a tough off balanced shot from Blackcrow with :30 left in the third quarter.

Chinook closed the game out strong after a Pretty Paint basket brought the Thunderbirds within three, 50-47 at the five minute mark of the fourth.

Hannum went 2-2 from the charity stripe and Ethan Bell followed suit on the 'Beeters next possession.

Elliot then found Isaac Bell for a score and Hannum hit Ethan for a bucket as Chinook began to pull away.

The 'Beeters closed out the game on a 18-7 run and secured a 62-49 win over the Thunderbirds.

The 'Beeter again had a balanced scoring attack. Isaac Bell tallied 11 in the win while Ethan added nine. Schneider finished with ten points and Elliot recorded nine, all in the third quarter. Isaac also recorded seven rebounds and dished out eight assists.

Saturday in Chinook the 'Beeters were looking to run their home winning streak to 20 games as they welcomed the Big Sandy Pioneers to town.

Chinook led 14-6 early and 35-18 at the break. The 'Beeters would score 35 more in the second half and earn a 70-39 win over the Pioneers to improve to 12-0, while also winning their twentieth in a row at home.

Isaac and junior Hunter Neibauer each finished with 11 markers. Elliot added ten as did Schneider. Ethan scored nine and Kellam and Edwards added six apiece for the Sugarbeeters.

Saturday in Chester the Thunderbirds were looking to bounce back against the Hawks.

The T-birds knocked down four triples in the first quarter getting two from junior Wyman Bringinggood, one from senior Gilbert Snow and another from senior Kyle Young Jr. to take a 21-14 lead early.

Snow added another long three in the second quarter to help the Thunderbirds extend their advantage to 38-30 at the break.

The Thunderbirds and Hawks each scored nine in third quarter action as Hays/Lodge Pole maintained their eight point advantage.

Hays/Lodge Pole would finish the game strong and secure a 59-48 win over the Hawks. With the victory the Thunderbirds improve to 6-3 in District 9C play and 8-4 overall.

The Turner Tornadoes were on the road Friday looking for a win in Gildford as they took on the North Star Knights.

The Tornadoes started slow and trailed 20-7 after eight minutes. The team has a lot of heart and battled back in the second, outscoring the Knights 16-12 but still trailed 32-23 as they teams head into halftime.

The Tornadoes were unable to chip into the Knights lead in the second half and fell 61-51. They were led in the contest by senior Cody Welsh with 20 points. Senior Tracer Heilig added 12 and sophomore Shane Kimmel eight in the contest.

Saturday, at home, the Tornadoes were host to the Fort Benton Longhorns. Earlier in the season the two teams battled it out on a two overtime thriller. That wouldn't be the case on this night.

The Longhorns took a 15-8 lead into the second quarter and led the Tornadoes 35-21 after two. Turner rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Longhorns 18-10 in the fourth quarter.

In the end it was the Longhorns picking up a 62-47 win over Turner. Kimmel led the Tornadoes with 20 points. Welsh and Heilig each added eight for the Tornadoes.

The Harlem Wildcats had a tough go of things Friday in Malta as they took on the Mustangs.

Malta led 15-4 after eight minutes and 27-17 at the break. They made a living at the charity strip down the stretch and defeated the Wildcats 56-38.

Harlem was whistled for 29 fouls in the contest resulting in 35 Mustang free throws. The Mustangs were called for 12 fouls resulting in seven attempts for the Wildcats.

Harlem was led in the contest by senior Lane Allen's nine points. Freshman Tyler Cichosz added eight and freshman RJ Ramone scored seven.

Saturday in Wolf Point the Wildcats were out gunned early as the Wolves took a 40-18 lead into halftime. The second half Harlem stayed even as they were unable to cut much off the Wolves advantage, falling 63-42.

Cichosz scored 12 in the game to lead the Wildcats. Ramone and junior Truth Brockie each added 10 for the Wildcats.
