Sugarbeeter move to 16-0, showdown in Fort Benton this Saturday

February 6, 2019

Chinook senior Isaac Bell slams home two points Thursday night as the Sugarbeeters raced out to a 53-24 halftime lead before securing a 77-29 non-conference win over the Wildcats.

This is it, the high school basketball season is down to its final week of the regular season and while there are some tournament seeds set in stone, many remain to be determined over the course of the weekend.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters continued their roll through the regular season, defeating the Harlem Wildcats 77-29 on Thursday night. Two days later they took down Turner tornadoes 88-45 to improve to 12-0 in conference and 14-0 overall.

The Turner tornadoes were able to pick up a huge District 9C win over the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds Friday evening in a thriller, holding on for a 58-56 conference win.

The Thunderbirds suffered another heartbreaking loss Saturday night falling to the Fort Benton Longhorns in overtime 66-63.

The Harlem Wildcats suffered a tough setback to the Glasgow Scottie's 66-56 at home Saturday afternoon as they honored their seniors prior to the game.

Thursday night Chinook senior Cord Schneider found Brandon Edwards underneath for an easy two points to get to Chinook on the board first against the Harlem Wildcats.

Senior Isaac Bell then found Schneider underneath for another easy bucket and a 4-0 lead. On the next possession junior Hunter Neibauer made a great pass inside, finding senior Brendan Edwards down low for a quick 6-0 lead.

Schneider then connected twice from the charity stripe to push the lead to eight just minutes into the game.

Wildcat freshman RJ Ramone got his team on the board midway through the first quarter with a mid-range jumper to cut the deficit to 12-2.

Sophomore Ethan Bell responded immediately with a floater in the lane and was quickly followed by an emphatic slam by Isaac Bell to put the sugarbeeters up 16-2.

Ramone then connected from downtown for the Wildcats but Isaac again scored off a nice pass from Neibauer to get the points right back for the Sugarbeeters.

Freshman Daniel Lawrence connected from long-range for the Wildcats to bring them back within ten, 18-8 only to see Ethan Bell take a nice pass from senior Trajan Hannum and knock down the straightaway three to push the lead back to 13.

Hannum then found a wide-open sophomore Reese Elliot near the basket for another bucket and Ethan Bell turned another steel into an easy deuce to put Chinook up 26-10

Elliot secured the other end with an emphatic block but Lawrence would follow with a bucket at the end of the first quarter.

Schneider found Edwards underneath at the beginning of the second quarter to keep the offense rolling.

Chinook would take a 53-24 lead at the halftime and go on to win the game 77-29 over the Wildcats.

Isaac Bell and Schneider each finished with 16 points for the Sugarbeeters while Ethan Bell added 13. Edwards contributed 12 in the win for the Sugarbeeters.

Saturday night Bell controlled the opening tip right to Neibauer who then immediately found Schneider underneath for a quick 2-0 Sugarbeeter lead early.

The Tornadoes responded with a basket from senior Tracer Heilig to even the score at 2-2. Isaac Bell then connected from the right side or the arc for a 5-2 Chinook lead, but sophomore Shane Kimmel answered back with a three-pointer of his own for the Tornadoes.

Stingy as ever, the 'Beeter defense forced a 10 second call on the ensuing Tornado possession and Schneider followed by converting a long pass from Neibauer into an easy basket at the rim and a 7-5 Chinook lead.

Senior James Christensen then made a nice dish in to Schneider to extend advantage to 9-5.

Heilig answered with another Turner three pointer to cut the lead back to 9-8 for the 'Beeters. Schneider then controlled the offensive rebound, tipping it in from above the rim for an 11-8 Chinook lead.

Ethan Bell pulled up from 15 feet and knocked the shot down for 13-8 Chinook advantage.

Senior Cody Welsh convert ed an offensive rebound for two points for the Tornadoes to bring them back within one 13-12 late in the first quarter. Neibauer then got behind the defense for an easy layup and a 15-12 Chinook lead. Schneider added another bucket in the closing seconds completing fitting a perfectly executed fast break for a 19-14 Chinook at the end of one.

Isaac found nothing but net on a long three pointer set up by a nice pass from Ethan to start the second quarter to extend the lead to 25-14. Edward's then scored off a tip in offensive rebound for the Sugarbeeters and Welsh answered with a pair from the charity stripe for the Tornadoes to make the score 27-18 midway through the second quarter.

Ethan Bell followed by converting a missed free throw into points and a 32-18 lead for the Sugarbeeters. Bell then found senior Riley Kellam underneath and Isaac knocked down another 3-pointer for the Sugarbeeters and a 37-20 advantage.

With just :01.8 seconds remaining in the half the Hannum's inbound pass covered 3/4 length of the court, a perfect pass to Elliot right at the rim for an easy score as time expired giving Chinook a 46-24 halftime lead.

The 'Beeter offense continue to roll in the second half with Schneider finishing at the rim followed by a pair of baskets by Kellam to push the lead to 62-34.

The Sugarbeeters took 64-39 advantage into fourth quarter and walked away with an 88-45 victory over the tornadoes to improve 16-0 on the season.

Schneider led the 'Beeter effort with 22 points, converting 11 field goals in the contest. Isaac Bell added 14 points, Elliot finished with 11 as did Kellam. Edwards added 14 for the Sugarbeeters in the win.

The win sets up, in all likelihood a winner take all contest in Fort Benton next Saturday, should the Longhorns and the Sugarbeeters win their Friday evening contest.

The Sugarbeeters own a 48-46 win over the Longhorns back in January but it will all be on the line Saturday night with the conference's number one seed up for grabs.

Friday night in Hays fans were treated to one heck of a game between the Turner Tornadoes and the Thunderbirds.

Hays/Lodge Pole led 18-11 after eight minutes of action, picking up six points from senior Kenneth Blackcrow in the opening stanza. The Tornadoes got four points from senior Kody Welsh.

The Tornado offense came alive in the second quarter scoring 19 points led by sophomore Austin Welch's six points . Cody added five points for the Tornadoes including one from downtown and Spencer See converted four of six from the charity stripe for the Tornadoes.

Senior Gilbert Snow knocked down a long three and scored seven points in the second quarter for the Thunderbirds who had a 36-30 lead at the intermission

The third quarter was all Turner as they outscored the Thunderbirds 13-5 getting two three-pointers and 10 points and Welsh to take 44-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Thunderbirds were able to trim the lead by one down the stretch but it was the Tornadoes that earned a hard fought 58-56 win over the Thunderbirds.

Turner was lead in the contest by Cody Welsh's 27 points, Austin Welsh added 10 for the Tornadoes. Snow scored 18 for the Thunderbirds and senior Kyle Young Jr. added 10. Blackcrow chipped in 14 for the Thunderbirds.

Saturday the Thunderbirds were dealt a tough 66-63 setback to the Fort Benton Longhorns in a game that went to overtime to determine the outcome.

Heading into the final week of the season the Sugarbeeters hold the top seed in the District 9C tournament with a perfect 16-0 record overall, 12-0 in conference. The Thunderbirds currently sit in third with an 8-5 conference mark 10-6 overall. Turner, a rapidly improving team over the past 2 weeks, now sits at 3-9 in conference and 4-12 overall and holds the seven seed in the district 9C.

The Harlem Wildcats welcome the Glasgow Scotties to town Saturday afternoon in a District 2B contest between the number four and number five seeds and preview of what could be the play-in game at the District 2B tournament.

Glasgow opened up with a 17-11 lead after one and pushed the advantage to 36-21 by intermission. In the end Glasgow earned a 66-56 win over Harlem.
