Chinook Golfers perform well on home course, five qualify for State Tournament

April 17, 2019

The Chinook High School Golf team hosted their second meet of the season this past Saturday. Teams are having a difficult time getting on many courses due to the long winter but the Sugarbeeters have had the opportunity to play on the local course for some time. Chinook swept the girls and boys tournament. Pictured above (L-R): Senior Chase Moxley 56-44 100 - 1st, freshman Braden Eoff 55-53 108 - 2nd, sophomore Ethan MacLeod 56-55 111 - 3rd, sophomore Hailey Bell 48-52 100 - 1st, senior Ashley MacLeod 52-53 105 - 2nd and Alyssa Gruszie 51-55 106 - 3rd.

The long cold extended winter is still leaving its mark on the spring sports schedule as local high school golf teams saw another opportunity to play following the cancellation of the Cut Bank Invitational on Friday.

The course in Chinook however came through the winter in good shape and was ready to give teams an opportunity to compete. Generally the Sugarbeeters host their Invitational the first Saturday in May, however this year they hosted their second meet of the season this past Saturday.

Teams from Malta, Harlem, Hays/Lodge Pole and Box Elder joined Chinook for a boys and girls tournament.

The Sugarbeeter Golf team has previously qualified two golfers for the state tournament at their first tournament and were looking to qualify a few more on Saturday.

For the girls, senior Ashley MacLeod and sophomore Hailey Bell had qualified a week earlier in the Sugarbeeters first meet.

Saturday Bell won the girls tournament. Bell had a fantastic front nine, shooting a 48 to take the lead at the turn. On the back nine she scored a 52 to finish with a 100 and win the tournament by five strokes.

MacLeod won the first tournament in Chinook and went out in 52. She recorded a 53 coming in to finish second with a 105.

Sophomore Alyssa Gruszie hit her mark Saturday becoming the third Chinook girl to qualify for the State C. Gruszie shot a 51-55 106. Also qualifying for the state tournament was sophomore Crystal Hofer, who turned in a 51-57 108 to finish fourth.

For the boys, senior Chase Moxley became the first to qualify for the state meet. Moxley went out in 56 but had a superb back nine, coming in with a 44 to finish with a 100. The qualifying standard for boys is 100.

Freshman Braden Eoff made the most of his first high school tournament with a 55-53 108 to finish second in the boys tournament.

Sophomore Ethan MacLeod went out in 56 and came in with a 55 to finish third with a 111.
