Creating Art from Old Books

June 26, 2019

Sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) and by the Aaniiih Nakoda College (ANC) Library, the ANC Library will host a free “make and take” workshop on Tuesday, July 2, from 1:00-4:00 p.m.

According to ANC Librarian Eva English, supplies will be provided and everyone is welcome to join the crew to make a wreath out of pages from old books. The workshop will take place at the ANC Library located at 330 Assiniboine Avenue on the ANC campus.

Courtney Werk, Bryce Stiffarm, and English will be the presenters at the book wreath workshop. The idea to create wreaths originated with Google images, and because the library has done its spring weeding, it has a group of books that will be discarded. Rather than seeing those books simply end up in a landfill, the project organizers decided to give them a second life and sought out a project that would repurpose the pages.

“This was one of the simpler/cooler projects that we found,” English said of the wreaths which resemble dahlias. The paper folding can take several forms, however, with roses, rosettes, magnolias, angel wings, and stars being among the most popular.

Sponsorship came from the IMLS after English applied for a Native American Library Service Enhancement Grant. “We’re on the third year of a two-year grant. We got an extension due to the bad winter during which we couldn’t get all the projects done on time,” English said.

Because the IMLS envisions a nation where museums and libraries work together to transform the lives of individuals and communities, the organization works to advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grantmaking, research, and policy development.
