Dunbar earns 5th place finish at State B/C, Leads Chinook to 3rd in Class C team race

Chinook sophomore Wyatt Dunbar takes his well deserved spot on the podium at the Class B/C State Wrestling Tournament in Billings this past weekend. Dunbar finished fifth at 285 pounds to earn All-State honors.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters and Harlem Wildcats were in Billings this past weekend as they concluded the 2020 High School wrestling season. When the dust settled Chinook sophomore Wyatt Dunbar had earned himself a 5th place spot on the podium and had also led the Sugarbeeters to a third place finish amongst the Class C teams in attendance.

The 'Beeters were represented well in Billings with six wrestlers competing. In addition to Dunbar who wrestled at 285 pounds. Chinook had junior Rebecca Stroh (113), sophomore Drake Berreth (132), freshman Tyler Schoen (152), senior JT Hauer (170) and senior Rielly Wiegand (182) in the field.

Dunbar was nearly responsible for all of Chinooks scoring in Billings, collecting 16 of the teams 22 points while going 4-2 on the mat.

Dunbar began the tournament Friday morning with a tough match against 2nd place State B/C finisher, Mayson Phipps of Glasgow. Dunbar gave Phipps a battle early on but eventually succumbed to a pin at th3 3:30 mark.

Dunbar showed tremendous heart and resilience by bouncing back in his next match. Taking on Kali Hood (Columbus/Absarokee/Park City) he picked up a win by pin-fall just :55 into the match.

Looking to keep the momentum going Dunbar then squared off with Will McPherson of Thompson Falls in consolation second round contest. Dunbar again won by pin, this time the referee slapped the mat at the 1:58 mark.

Dunbar then faced a familiar opponent in the consolation third round when he battled Stetson Lefurgy of Fort Benton/Big Sandy. Dunbar this season has had his way with LeFurgey ans Saturday in Billings was no different. Dunbar earned his third consecutive win by pin at 2:02 to advance to the consolation semi-final round.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters scored 22 points at the state tournament and finished third among Class C teams.

Dunbar then ran into eventual 3rd place finisher Trey Yates of Colstrip. The two heavyweights battled back and forth for quit some time before Yates gained the upper hand and pinned Dunbar 4:37 into the match.

The loss sent Dunbar to the 5/6th place match against Reubin Swenson of Chester/Joplin-Inverness. The two were evenly split 3-3 in previous matches but Saturday afternoon it was Dunbar earning the pin at the 3:59 mark to finish fifth in the tournament and earn All-State honors in the process.

Also picking up a win for the Sugarbeeters was Schoen in the consolation first round.

The Harlem Wildcats were represented in Billings by a pair of wrestlers in junior Lance Blackcrow (160) and sophomore Mikkel Rider (205. Congratulations to all of our local wrestlers on a season in which they competed to the best of their abilities.
