'Beeters finish 4th at Northern C, Wildcats conclude season at Northern B

March 4, 2020

Chinook senior Hunter Neibauer scores in the 'Beeters first round win over the Roy/Winifred Outlaws Thursday afternoon.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters and the Harlem Wildcats were both looking for a different outcome at the Northern C and Northern B Divisional Tournaments this past weekend but in the world of sport things often don't turn out the way you had hoped.

The Sugarbeeters were in Great Falls at the Northern C Divisional this past weekend and after opening up with a 50-45 first round win over the Roy/Winifred Outlaws Thursday afternoon they were feeling pretty good about their tournament position. Friday in the semifinal round they faced a familiar foe in the Big Sandy Pioneers, a team they had handle three times previously this season. On Friday night though the Pioneers were riding an emotional high following two upset wins that landed them in the semifinal and handed the 'Beeters a 58-48 setback.

Chinook bounced back Saturday morning with a lopsided 68-42 win over the Centerville Miners to advance to the consolation final and maintain a slim hope of a challenge game. In the afternoon contest with the Belt Huskies a rough third quarter put them in a tough spot as they were unable to complete a fourth quarter comeback and saw their season end at the hands of the Belt Huskies 52-47. The Huskies would go on to finish second in the tournament while the Pioneers would finish as the number three team.

The Harlem Wildcats took the District 2B No. 2 seed into the Northern B Divisional in Malta Thursday afternoon and they themselves were also looking for a solid tournament effort. Thursday they bested the Rocky Boy Stars of the District 1B in first round action 57-50 to advance to the semifinal round.

Friday night the Wildcats and the Fairfield Eagles squared off in battle for a spot in the Championship Saturday night. The two teams went toe to toe start to finish but in the end it was the Eagles narrowly edging the Wildcats 68-66. Saturday morning in loser out action the Wildcats and Malta Mustangs met once again, both looking to keep their season alive. When the final horn sounded it was Malta claiming a 59-54 win to end the Wildcats season.

The Sugarbeeters and Wildcats both competed hard in their respective tournament and their seasons didn't end due to a lack of effort. While both teams looked to catch a break when needed ,things just didn't go their way in the end.

In the 'Beeters two wins over Roy/Winifred and Centerville they had plenty of highlights. Thursday against the Outlaws the 'Beeters jumped out to a 15-8 lead and maintained the advantage at intermission. The Outlaws were able to trim three off the lead heading into the fourth quarter but Chinook maintained their composure down the stretch to secure the win 50-45.

The 'Beeters had three players in double figures led by junior Reese Elliot's 17 points, junior Ethan Bell added 12 as did sophomore Toby Niederegger. Elliot also had 12 rebounds and four blocks in the win while Bell dished out six assists.

In the 'Beeters win over Centerville, Chinook led 15-11 after one and 34-26 at the break. The 'Beeters then used a big second half effort to cruise to a 68-42 win. Chinook posted four players with double figure scoring. Niederegger led the way with 20 points, Bell added 17. Senior Hunter Neibauer chipped in 11 and Elliot contributed 10 in the win. Elliot added 13 rebounds to his effort, Neibauer cleaned the glass for ten rebounds and Niederegger added five assists to his resume.

For the Harlem Wildcats in their win over the Rocky Boy Stars they put together a solid effort start to finish in the third meeting between the two teams.

The Wildcat offense was a bit sluggish out of the gate, managing just eight first quarter points and six more in the second as they trailed at intermission 21-14. In true Wildcat fashion this season the boys returned to the court to start the third with their running shoes on and promptly put up 29 points in the frame to take a 43-31 advantage into the home stretch.

In the end Harlem would win the rubber match between the two Northern B foes 57-50. The Wildcats were paced on the night by senior Brad Cichosz who calmly collected 20 points, including a pair from long range. Sophomore Tyler Cichosz added 13 markers in the win as well
