Letter to the Editor

August 26, 2020

Blaine County has a long history of fair and non-partisan administration of our elections. Over the years that I appeared on the ballot, I had occasion to work with the chief election officer, our Clerk and Recorder, on how our elections were conducted. From my friend, Republican Lucille Oehmcke, through Democrat Sandy Boardman, and now Tammy Williams, our Clerk and Recorder has always conducted the election in this county so that the voters' will could be expressed, not how any party or candidate might wish to achieve some kind of advantage, Mail-in balloting is not a system that confers some partisan advantage. It is a system that enables the voter to safely and securely express his or her will, whatever that voter's choices are, especially in these uncertain Covid-19 driven times . Current Clerk and Recorder Williams proved this spring that her office could conduct mail-in balloting without any hint of irregularities at great savings to the Blaine County taxpayer, and without endangering the health of those volunteers who have traditionally managed the local polling places. Harlem and Chinook, along with our school districts have conducted mail-in ballot elections for several years. Any decision to cancel mail-in balloting could only be made because a decision maker wishes to skew our election process to the partisan political demands of one of our candidates for President. And that would be a shame. Please keep the mail-in ballot process in place that served us so well this June.

Sincerely,

Greg Jergeson
