Training on Trauma Informed Teaching Available

October 7, 2020

In partnership with Havre Public Schools, Region II of the Comprehensive System of Personnel Development (CSPD) will offer free on-line training on the topic of trauma informed teaching for general and special educators, paraprofessionals, agency personnel, and parents who work with children and/or students. Dr. Linda Karges-Bone will be the featured speaker for this two-day virtual training, which will occur on October 2 and October 9.

According to Aileen Couch, CSPD Regional Coordinator, “Trauma Informed Teaching: Moving Students from Surviving to Thriving” is a session designed to extend participants’ understanding of the impact of trauma and poverty on the brain and on pupil behavior and decisions.

Specializing in using current brain research to create accessible classroom resources for elementary teachers, Karges-Bone is a Distinguished Professor of Education at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, South Carolina, where she prepares future teachers and writes frequently for educational and parenting journals and other media. Her books investigate topics such as sensory and gender-based teaching methods, differentiated learning, and creating brain-friendly classroom environments.

In her 90-minute keynote on October 2, Karges-Bone will share research that focuses on the significant attention paid to social-emotional learning (SEL) as it affects students, families, and educational stakeholders. SEL is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Karges-Bone will further provide a review of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), as well as strategies to resolve and reconnect after those experiences. “The goal,” she explains, “is to help students rewrite their mental scripts using precise language, social learning, and mindfulness.” Handouts and a PowerPoint will be made available to each participant.

After the keynote on Day One, there will be a 1.5 hour breakout session designed to take participants into the next steps of implementation. Participants will focus on the “now what?” of trauma informed education with Dr. Karges-Bone’s unique “FLIPPED ACES” model. The group will investigate specific strategies for applying brain-friendly teaching and SEL to the alleviation of stress and brain atrophy as a result of trauma. For use during the break-out session, each participant will receive a copy of Karges-Bone’s book Brain Tips.

The second day of this professional development opportunity will occur on October 9 and is designated as Book Talks Day. Building on the work session from October second, Dr. Bone will unpack her two books Rich Brain Poor Brain and Brain Tips. The objective of these conversations is to prepare participants to apply the strategies and models during the 2020-2021 school year. These book talks are designed to increase participants’ knowledge base, skill set, and dispositions in the areas of differentiation and personalization of learning. Participants will also receive guiding questions to use over the course of the academic year to extend capacity.

Registration for this workshop is open now. Those interested in attending should go online to http://www.blueponyk12.com where they will click on the CSPD icon and then on the hyperlink that reads: “Register Here For Upcoming CSPD Training Events!” On this site, individuals will also find a flyer outlining the workshop’s schedule and its details. Unless the workshop fills, registrations will be taken through October 1. Once registered, potential participants will receive instructions via email for how to access the training. Couch will also be mailing books to these individuals.

For those who collect them for recertification purposes, six renewal units will be available for this training through the Office of Public Instruction (OPI).

Region II CSPD coordinates personnel development to meet the diverse needs of all children and youth in the counties of Cascade, Teton, Pondera, Toole, Glacier, Liberty, Hill, Blaine, and Chouteau. Although preference will be given to people living in these areas, participation by individuals from outside of Region II is also welcome.
