Gradually Joy Will Replace Grief at Sweet Home

December 9, 2020

Donna Murphy celebrated her birthday in October. Those celebrating November birthdays were John Haldemann, Theresa Tincher, Irene Allen, and Angel Wagner.

Many tears were shed and stories swapped in remembrance of the ten family members lost from Sweet Memorial Nursing Home due to the invasion of COVID-19. As the staff and administration of the Home move beyond their grief, they are happy to report that currently the Sweet Home has no active cases and twenty recoveries.

Due to Centers for Disease Control guidelines, the residents of Sweet Memorial Nursing Home (SMNH) remained in their rooms for the most part in November. There, some passed the time watching videos and chatting with family on Facetime. Others spent time putting together puzzles.

To bring cheer to the residents at Thanksgiving, Linda Hinkle's grandchildren made turkeys for all of the SMNH residents. Using construction paper and the cardboard inserts from toilet paper rolls to create the Thanksgiving centerpieces, the young artists brought delight to the senior citizens.

With all of the COVID cases recovered and no new positive cases emerging, residents were gradually able to return to small group activities and socially distanced eating in the dining room.

As the winter holiday season amps up, the staff at SMNH remind everyone that their residents enjoy receiving cards and letters in the mail. "It may be considered old-fashioned, but handwritten mail serves as a connection to their loved ones. They keep the cards and letters close and reread them often," Ward Clerk Carla Uhl reported.

Another reminder comes regarding trees in resident rooms. Only artificial Christmas trees are allowed, and no open flames and/or candles may be used. In addition, extension cords are prohibited, due to their posing a tripping hazard.

The staff, administration, and residents of the Home wish to extend gratitude to the following generous donors who helped them to weather these turbulent and troubling times and to make like sweeter and more pleasurable:

• Susan Meisdalen: Monetary Donation

Frances Ewing, who claims to have forgotten how enjoyable puzzle construction can be, spent some of her "shut-in" time piecing together puzzles.

• Betty Billmayer: Cupcakes and Pies

• Karen Pike: Quilted Lap Blankets

• Max & Ginger Maddox: Garden Goodies

• Judy Johnson: Peace Lily

• Ken & Diana Martin: Wheelchair and Cookies

• YoYo Johnson: Cinnamon Rolls

• Linda Hinkle: Box of Cookies and Lysol Spray

• Sheryle Horn: Cards and Snacks

• Rhonda Baker: Books

• Day Eagle Hope Project: Puzzle Books
