Fort Belknap Indian Community Congratulates Deb Haaland

December 30, 2020

The Fort Belknap Indian Community congratulates U.S. House of Representative Deb Haaland on her appointment as the Secretary of the Interior. It is a breath of fresh air for Indian Country and we are sure it instills confidence in tribes who continue to fight for their treaty rights, their sovereignty and protection for their lands and people.

She made history in her appointment as one of the first Native American women appointed to the U.S. House of Representatives, and now continues that historic precedence in being appointed as the first Native American to hold a cabinet position in the U.S. government.

This evidences her ability to lead and the confidence others have in her, including the Fort Belknap Indian Community.

We look forward to engaging with Secretary-elect Haaland on a government-to government basis. Her years as a Congressional Representative and personal and professional experience in Indian Country will assist her in making informed and fair decisions regarding all Native people and Natural Resources, which go hand-in-hand at times.

The Fort Belknap Indian Community is encouraged that we will be able to move forward on resolution to outstanding issues. We wish Secretary Haaland the best and stand willing to assist her.

The Fort Belknap Indian Community strongly urges the U.S. Senate to confirm the appointment of Deb Haaland to the position of U.S. Secretary of the Interior.
