January 13, 2021

Blaine County's Ag/4-H Extension Agent, Juli Snedigar recently announced two programs that may interest area producers. The Soil Fertility Webinar Series with presenter Dr. Clain Jones and the Winter Producer Series hosted in a partnership with North Central Montana Stockgrowers both began on January 6.

The MSU Extension Winter 2021 Soil Fertility Webinar Series will run every Wednesday through February 23. These weekly webinars will be broadcast live with Dr. Jones, who is a Soil Fertility Professor at Montana State University and the Extension Service's Soil Fertility Specialist. He studies nutrient cycling, primarily in agroecosystems, and has a particular interest in cropping systems.

In this webinar series, Jones will leave time for questions specific to farming systems after addressing the following topics:

• Basic soil fertility and testing

• Nitrogen fundamentals

• N for small grains, pulses, and oilseeds

• Micronutrient management

• Forage soil fertility (annual and perennial)

• Sustainable nutrient management (leaching, soil acidification, soil health, and more)

• Cover crops

These webinars can be viewed personally online. However, any producers who are unable to view these sessions from their homes and would like to attend in-person should contact the Extension Office by calling 357-3200. Otherwise, to register, interested individuals should visit https://www.montana.edu/cope/rsvp/front-end/rsvp.php?unique_id =5fb6ebfdbbcb65fb6ebfdbbcf5.

Although registration for these workshops is not mandatory, it is encouraged. Those registered will receive an email reminder prior to each session, along with webinar login information and any supporting materials. Recordings of sessions will also be available after the scheduled date and can be accessed at https://landresources.montana.edu/soilfertility/presentations.html.

Occurring once a week into February, the second featured program, the Winter Producer Series, will consist of recorded, educational broadcasts. These will be posted to the North Central Montana Stockgrowers' Facebook page for people to view at their leisure. Topics to date include Wildlife Update from Dr. Jared Beaver, MSU Wildlife Specialist; Crop and Grazing Land Leasing by Kate Fuller, MSU Ag Economics Specialist; and an MSU Research Station Update from Dr. Darrin Boss, who serves as the Head of the Department of Research Centers. These informational recordings will also include contact details if any viewer has questions.

About these events, Snedigar stated: "We have several workshops and seminars for the public to access as MSU Extension jumps into the new year. All of these programs are free and available to you virtually wherever you may be!"
