It was a tough week on the hardwood for our local high school girls basketball teams this past weekend. The Harlem Lady Cats remain the only team still playing as the Chinook Sugarbeeters, Turner Tornadoes and Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbird all saw their seasons come to a close at the District 9C Tournament. The Lady Cats head to Poplar this week to take part in the District 2B Tournament.

The Turner Tornadoes began the week with a lopsided 71-31 win over the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Shyan Krass led the team with 23 points on the night. In Thursdays semifinal with the North Star knights, the Tornadoes made a valiant comeback, but fell just short, falling 40-37. Krass recorded a remarkable 26 rebounds in the contest for the Tornadoes. Saturday the Tornadoes couldn't keep pace with the Box Elder Bears and saw their season end with a 51-34 setback.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbird were bested by the Box Elder Bears in their first round game Tuesday evening. The Thunderbirds responded with a bout against the Big Sandy Pioneers on Wednesday. The Thunderbirds coasted to a 71-26 win over the Pioneers with senior Ella Messerly scoring 17 points in the contest. Unfortunately COVID-19 reared its ugly head and out of an abundance of caution with regards to a possible outbreak with the Hays/Lodge Pole boys basketball team, the girls made the difficult decision to put the safety of the other teams in the tournament first and canceled the remainder of their tournament. The Thunderbird girls had no positive cases at the time of the decision.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters stayed with the North Star Knights as long as they could but in the end it was North Star claiming a first round win over the Sugarbeeters 71-52. As a result the 'Beeters got to play one more game in their home gym on Wednesday where they faced the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks in a loser out contest.

The Sugarbeeters owned two one sided regular season wins over the Hawks and again coasted to an easy win 64-24. Senior Jayden Miller led the attack with 19 points in the win. Friday morning Chinook was back in the Havre Blue Pony gymnasium to take on the Box Elder Bears. Unfortunately their season would come to a close with a 65-42 setback.

The Harlem Lady Cats began the week with a setback to the Malta M-ettes on Tuesday. Thursday night the Lady Cats were in Wolf Point where the Wolves were victorious. Saturday the Harlem girls were looking to close out the season on a high note and did just that with a 68-61 win over the Indians. Senior Gabi Bell connected four times from beyond the arc ans score 16 points in the win. Junior Taya Trottier knocked down a pair of triples and added 16 of her own in the Lady Cats win.

The Lady Cats will play the Poplar Indians in a play-in game at the District 2B Tournament in Poplar, Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. A win will have them taking on the Malta M-ettes in a Friday night semifinal and ensure them of a spot at the Northern B Divisional Tournament. A loss will end their season.
