Senior Reese Elliot slams home a monster dunk in Thursdays opening round win over the Heart Butte Warriors.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters concluded an outstanding season on the hardwood this past weekend at the Northern C Divisional. Played at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls the 17-4 'Beeters played four games, going 3-1 in the process. The one came Friday night against the Belt Huskies, a tough 64-63 overtime loss. The 'Beeters opened the tournament Thursday with a 68-28 shellacking of the Heart Butte Warriors. They finished the tournament Saturday night with a 76-59 win over the Warriors in the consolation final. The 'Beeters also defeated the Roy/Winifred Outlaws 65-41 to advance to Saturday nights contest.

Chinook was methodical in their start, taking a 13-7 lead into the second quarter against the Warriors Thursday night. The 'Beeters pushed the lead to 29-14 by intermission and led 53-24 after three quarters. In the end it was all 'Beeters as they advanced with a 68-28 win. Senior Ethan Bell paved the way for the offense with 21 points while senior Reese Elliot added 14 points and nine rebounds. Junior Oskar Pula added 12 points and nine rebounds to the effort.

Friday night the 'Beeter took on the Belt Huskies. The Huskies are a very good team having defeated two of the best Class B teams in the state. Belt swept the Fairfield Eagles in the regular season and also earned a 9 point win over the Shelby Coyotes as well. The Sugarbeeters weren't intimidated by any stretch and dug their feet in for a battle that would test both teams resolve.

Chinook took a 15-13 lead into the second quarter, but the Huskies owned a 31-27 halftime advantage. Belt pushed the lead to 45-38 by the start of the fourth quarter. In what was already a tightly contested contest things were only beginning to heat up.

Junior Toby Niederegger converted an old fashioned three point play with 2:54 remaining in regulation to trim the Belt lead to 53-49. Moments later senior Benton Elliot took a pass from Bell and drained a three point bomb to cut the lead to one, 53-52.

The 'Beeters then got a huge emotional boost as senior Ethan McLeod entered the game. MacLeod had suffered a knee injury the previous week and his status was uncertain. Chinook was in foul trouble and his services were called upon and he certainly delivered.

Pula then took a great feed from Benton Elliot, spun to the basket and finished for a 54-53 Chinook lead. Pula then showed his metal. After being fouled near mid-court with :22 left in regulation, Pula, with ice in his veins knocked down a pair from the charity stripe to push the lead to three, 56-53. The Huskies however would knock down a game tying three with :03.7 remaining, sending the game to overtime.

In the overtime Belt scored the first four points to take a 60-56 lead. Niederegger scored with 1:38 remaining to cut the deficit back to two. Bell then calmly converted a pair of free throws to bring Chinook back within one, 61-60. Bell then scored an acrobatic basket in the paint for a 62-61 'Beeter lead. With time running down a 'Beeter foul sent the Huskies to the line where they converted two free throws for a 63-62 lead. A corner three as time ran out was just long and the 'Beeters were dealt a tough loss.

Bell led the offense with 22 points and four assists in the contest while Pula finished with 17 points. Elliot scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds for the 'Beeters in the contest.

The Sugarbeeters were back on the court Saturday morning to take on the Roy/Winifred Outlaws. Chinook opened up a 16-7 lead after eight minutes of action and pushed the advantage to 26-21 by intermission. Elliot closed out the third quarter with a rim rattling dunk to give Chinook a 49-31 lead entering the fourth quarter. Elliot added another slam moments later and the 'Beeters were in cruise control.

Chinook advanced to the consolation final with a 65-41 thumping of the Outlaws. Bell led the offensive attack with 24 points and five assists in the win. Elliot added 16 points and 14 rebounds to the teams totals. Niederegger contributed 10 points and five assists in the win.

In the consolation final the 'Beeters took a 36-18 halftime lead and maintained the advantage the remainder of the contest. The 'Beeters made a living from the charity stripe down the stretch converting 27-36 from the free throw line. Chinook attempted just one free throw in the first half.

Bell knocked down all 16 of his attempts from the line including a 10-10 effort in the fourth quarter alone. Bell finished with 29 points in the win. Niederegger added 16 points and six assists while Elliot scored 14 and grabbed nine rebounds.
