Lady Cats, Wildcats Finish 3rd at District 2B, Northern B Divisional starts Thursday

Lady Cat junior Taya Trottier had herself one heck of a District 2B Tournament this past weekend. In Saturdays consolation final with Wolf Point she drove the ball hard to the basket with less than a minute remaining to tie the contest at 37-37. Moments later she won the game with a corner three point bomb sending the Lady Cats to the Northern B Divisional with a 40-37 win.

It was a great week on the hardwood for the Harlem Lady Cats and Wildcat basketball teams as both the boys and girls punched their tickets to the Northern B Divisional later this week.

The Lady Cats earned wins over the Poplar Indians 58-49 on Thursday and the Wolf Point Wolves, 40-37 on Saturday to finish third at the District 2B Tournament in Poplar. The Lady Cats will begin play at the Northern B Divisional in Wolf Point on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. against the Choteau Bulldogs.

The Wildcats had fans on the edge of their seat through the District 2B Tournament in Wolf Point this past weekend on their way to a third place finish. Thursday they dropped a heart breaker in overtime to the Glasgow Scotties 61-60. The rebound Friday afternoon with 72-55 thumping of the Poplar Indians. Saturday in the consolation final they took down the Wolf Point Wolves 73-66 with a strong effort in the overtime win. Harlem will take on the Fairfield Eagles at the Northern B Divisional in Cut Bank Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.

The Lady Cats found themselves in a battle early on against the Poplar Indians Thursday night. The teams were tied at 12 after eight minutes and the Lady Cats led just 26-25 at the intermission. Junior Taya Trottier led the offensive effort in the second half scoring nine points as Harlem outscored the Indians in the third 15-11 and the fourth 15-13 to earn a 58-49 win. Trottier led the team with 13 points in the contest. Senior Alaynee Hawley scored 13 as well, including nine in the first half.

Trottier scored eight in their semifinal contest against the Malta M-ettes on Friday, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Cats fell 59-30. Harlem responded with a gutsy performance on Saturday against the Wolf Point Wolves. The Wolves swept the Lady Cats in the regular season but Trottier was having none of that on Saturday.

With her team down two late in the contest, Trottier drove hard to the basket for the game tying bucket at 37-37. As time wound down to :10 Trottier was clutch, canning a deep three for a 40-37 Harlem win. Trottier finished with 17 points in the contest, Hawley added 10 more for the Lady Cats.

The Wildcats were all over the map with highs and lows at the District 2B tournament in Wolf Point, experiencing both sides of overtime in the process. Thursday night against the Glasgow Scotties the Wildcats opened up a 19-15 lead early but found themselves down at the break, 34-29.

Senior Jehton Long Fox kept his team in the contest with a solid effort down the stretch scoring 14 second half points including nine in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Glasgow managed a 4-3 advantage in the extra period handing the Wildcats a 61-60 loss. Long Fox led the offensive attack with 18 points in the win.

Harlem took it to the Poplar Indians Friday afternoon, winning the rubber match in convincing fashion. The teams split the regular season contests with the Indians earning the win just a week ago. Harlem started fast taking a 20-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The maintained the lead in the second stanza to hold a 35-25 advantage at halftime.

Harlem put together a strong third quarter effort to extend the lead to 17 entering the fourth quarter 55-38. The Wildcats got balanced scoring down the stretch with contributions coming from six players in securing a 72-55 win. Senior Trent Main led the effort with 14 points, junior Tyler Cichosz added 12, Long Fox scored 10 and junior Daniel Lawrence added 10 more.

Saturday the Wildcats found themselves in another barn burner, against a team they had split their regular season meetings with. The Wildcats took a 6-12 lead into the second quarter only to give it back in the second with the teams locked in a 26-26 tie at the break.

The second half was a mirror image of the first with the Wildcats starting strong, pushing the lead to six, 45-39 at the start of the fourth quarter. The Wolves would finish regulation strong and send the game to overtime all even at 64-64. This time the extra frame was all Wildcats. Junior RJ Ramone score six in the overtime to power Harlem to a 73-66 win. Cichosz led the attack with 23 points, Ramone added 19 and junior Daniel Lawrence score 14.
