March 31, 2021

The City of Chinook is about to begin a major improvements project on the water distribution system. The project consists of the following elements: Replacement of approximately 3,330 feet of aging water main including new valves, fittings, temporary water service during construction, reconnection of existing water services to the new water main, replacement of 12 deficient fire hydrants, installation of 6 service meter vaults on existing services, and construction of a new bulk water loading station located near the fire hall. The contractor hired for the work is COP Construction from Billings, who was the low bidder. COP Construction was established in 1947, and has a history of successfully completing similar utility projects in Montana. The City is excited to work with COP on this project.

The main areas of construction will be just south of the fire hall along Stockyard Road and Illinois Street, Ohio Street between 10th St East and Stockyard Road, 10th Street West and Cleveland Road, Montana Street between 4th Street West and 6th Street West, the western portion of the Blaine County Fairgrounds, 3rd Street Northeast and Illinois Street, 6th Street East and Illinois Street, Utah Street between 7th Street East and 9th Street East, and 9th Street East between Utah Street and Minnesota Street.

Areas of Ohio Street, Montana Street and 6th Street West, and Utah Street and 9th Street East will have the water mains replaced with new piping. During this work, residents may be connected with a temporary water supply for several weeks. COP Construction will be coordinating with City staff and providing advance notice to residents concerning temporary water.

COP Construction will also be implementing traffic and pedestrian control measures near areas of construction to provide protection for residents and keep construction areas safe. COP Construction will be coordinating with residents whose private access may be restricted. City staff ask for your patience during construction and please be on the lookout for construction areas.

Construction will begin on Monday, April 5 and is expected to be complete by early August. If you have any questions, please contact City Hall at 357-3160.
