Organizers of First Farmer and Flea Market Report a Good Turnout

May 19, 2021

Despite the rainy weekend, the organizers of the inaugural Chinook Farmer and Flea Market on May 8-9 reported having a good turnout with fourteen vendors and a crowd from babies to senior citizens in attendance. Because the spay and neuter clinic had to reschedule their event when a veterinarian was forced to cancel due to an emergency, the Market was able to move indoors, using the Commercial Building on the Blaine County Fairgrounds.

According to one event organizer, Mary McKenzie, the Market saw over 300 people from Havre, Chinook, and Harlem who came out to sample the Brazilian food, pies, desserts, and coffees. They also shopped for vegetable plants, turquoise and handmade jewelry, books by local authors, home-canned salsa and pickled eggs, cedar birdhouses, wreaths and floral arrangements, skin care products, homemade crafts, goat massages, and various other wares and services.

Local musician Roger Fisher organized a few musicians to play during the event. He called their music ROC (really old country), and it set a dancing mood for some. The other planned entertainment-inflatables were never set-up due to the weather, "though we had them there ready to go," McKenzie stated. "It was a fun day."

Feedback from vendors was positive and some already plan to come back for the next market, which is scheduled for June 12. "We are having the market outside next time, so hopefully the weather will be good," said McKenzie.

Anyone interested in participating in the upcoming Market is encouraged to go to blainecountyfair.net, click on the Farmer's Market link, and complete the Farmer's Market form to reserve a space. Questions can be directed to Fair Manager, Debbie Ramberg by calling 945-3841.
