'Beeter Thinclads find the Podium at the State C Track & Field Meet in Missoula

June 2, 2021

Chinook sophomore Braxton Inman hands the Baton to sophomore Tyler Schoen as he heads to the finish line Saturday at the Class C State Meet in Missoula. The Sugarbeeter 4x100 Meter relay took third in the event moving up a spot from their preliminary finish on Friday.

The 2021 Montana High School Track and Field season concluded this past weekend. The Class A and Class B schools were at the Laurel Sports Complex in Laurel, while the Class AA and Class C were at Missoula Big Sky in Missoula.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters sent twelve athletes to the State C to compete while the Turner Tornadoes were represented by senior Shyan Krass. The Harlem Wildcats contingent included seven athletes the final weekend of the season.

The Sugarbeeters had a fine showing in Missoula with five bringing home medals for their efforts. The Chinook Boys Short Relay has been quite impressive all season. The quartet of sophomore Brenden Fetter, junior Toby Niederegger, sophomore Braxton Inman and sophomore Tyler Schoen turned in a Prelim time of :45.78 Friday morning sending them into the Finals Saturday in fourth place.

In the finals the team strung together three solid exchanges of the baton and cut more than three tenths of a second from their Friday time to finish third following an effort of :45.42. The 'Beeters took their spot on the podium with their eyes already set on next season.

All four will be back again next spring and there is plenty to look forward to, "I think we did really good this year. We have one junior, and three sophomores, and we took third," said Schoen. "We are going to improve and do better next year." Niederegger added, "It was very exciting to compete with my team on the highest level of playing field."

Fetter, noted the teams potential moving forward, "Just be ready for next year, we have a lot of potential. Thank you to all the people who showed up and supported us in Missoula." Inman said, "We did great this year and we will be even greater next year. "

Sometimes a great season can be derailed by a untimely illness, and then sometimes the season can end with an incredibly transcendent moment. This was the case for Chinook sophomore Anna Terry. All season long Terry has been improving nearly every race, establishing new personal best times week in and week out. Heading into the Class C state meet in Missoula she was firmly seated in the top 10 on both the 3,200 and 1,600 Meter races.

Friday Terry was battling a tough spring cold and took to the track ready to give it her all, but her body wouldn't let her and she finished 19th with a time of 6:04.32. Saturday however was a different story as Terry dug deep and despite feeling far less than 100% turned in a personal best time of 12:26.03 shattering her previous best effort by more than ten full seconds. Her time also earned her a spot on the podium with a fifth place finish.

"When we arrived at State, I had so much congestion and sinus pressure, and I just didn't feel like myself. I really struggled to get any sleep the night before the meet," said Terry. "When the 1600 came around on Friday, the moment I started racing I knew that something wasn't right. I had a difficult time breathing, and though my brain was telling my body to go, it just wouldn't. I felt like I had no legs and struggled to finish each lap. I had nothing at the end of the race.

After a season with so many successes the sophomore was bit dejected, "It was devastating to show up to State after working hard all season and not be able to perform to the best of my ability. After the race, I spent the rest of the day and night sleeping, hydrating, and treating my symptoms, hoping I could race the next day."

That desire to prepare herself for Saturday paid off, "When I woke up on Saturday, I still wasn't feeling well. Coach Harwood and Coach Surber took me aside and said that the fact that I was there and trying to race spoke for itself and showed my determination. They told me to just go out there and do the best I could and leave it all on the track," she said. "Throughout the race, I just kept focused on that goal. It was basically all muscle memory from there. I felt like my body just went on autopilot. I kept calm, stayed focused, and just raced to the podium. I was really shocked to hear my time!"

Also finding the podium individually for the 'Beeters was Fetter in the 200 Meter Dash. Ranked in the top 10 throughout the season Fetter turned in an effort of :23.62 to earn a fifth place finish Saturday in Missoula. Inman also found the podium for the 'Beeters, crossing the finish line in :42.94 to finish sixth in the 300 Meter Hurdles.

Heading into the state meet chinook junior Toby Niederegger had his sites set clearly on the high jump. Niederegger came in as the number 2 seed in the state and after clearing 6'2" once again he looked to match his season best effort of 6'3". When all was said and done Niederegger finished second, concluding a very successful season and setting the stage for next spring

The 'Beeters received a strong showing from freshman Hallie Neibauer as well. Neibauer finished 11th in the 800 Meter Run, 12th in the 400 Meter Run and 17th in the 200 Meter Dash. Neibauer also competed in the 4x100 Meter Relay with freshman Charlie McKee, sophomore Aspyn Colby and sophomore Sasha Gallus.

Chinook senior Jayden Miller finished 22nd in the Javelin and 8th in the Discus. Junior Kinley Hamilton added an eighth place finish in the Shot Put to the 'Beeter effort. Turner senior Shyan Krass finished 13th in the Discus, 14th in the 3,200 Meter Run and 18th in the 1,600 Meter run while in Missoula.

Junior Taya Trottier led the way for the Harlem Track and Field team, having qualified for the State B in three events. Trottier has proven herself as a very good distance runner in her high school career and she turned in another solid effort this weekend in Laurel.

Trottier set the Harlem School Record in the 800 Meter Race during her freshman campaign, Saturday afternoon she once again set the bar. Trottier's effort of 2:28.81 in the 800 Meter Run at the Class B State Meet is the new standard at the school and earned her a eighth place finish in the talented field.

Trottier had a busy state meet, Friday she ran 1,600 Meter Race and then turned around Saturday and competed in both the 800 and 3,200 Meter Runs. Her 1,600 Meter time of 5:43.29 earned her a ninth place finish while her effort of 12:45.06 was good enough for eighth in the 3,200.

Senior Andrew Rasmussen competed in a pair of events for the Wildcats at the State B, finishing nineteenth in the 100 Meter Dash (:11.89), and eighteenth in the Long Jump (17'11.5"). Freshman Kaitlyn Johnson was twelfth in the 200 Meter Hurdles with a time of :51.39. Senior Chloe Messerly finished thirteenth in the Shot Put with a mark of 30'10.75". Junior Darius Longknife and sophomore Keonna MedicineBear rounded out the Harlem contingent with both competing in the High Jump.
