Wildcat's Join Northern C Eight-player Football

August 25, 2021

Senior Quarterback Mikkel Rider will guide the Wildcat offense this fall.

The Harlem Wildcats are set to begin their first season as a member of the Northern C Eight Player Football Division. After competing for decades in the Class B ranks declining numbers made the move necessary.

First year Head Coach Ken Bigby will lead the Wildcats this fall as they transition to Eight-player football.

The Wildcat roster have 18 kids listed on the roster this fall. Eight seniors are back and looking to make some noise this fall are Mikkel Rider, Darrius Longknife, Dalray Begay, Cody Weigand, Mike King, Trayce Sunchild, Marley Stewart and Teagan LeValdo. Four juniors are back looking to make an impact and they are Amari Stanley, Clay Adams, Charlie Calvert and Tommy Champagne.

Sophomores out this fall are Leon Champagne, Troy Longknife, Thunder Bigby and Trent King. Freshmen are Joseph Arensmeyer and Jay Thomas Stewart.

Rider, Stanley, Longknife, and Mike King all played significant rolls a season ago. Dalray Begay, Clay Adams, Charley Calvert, and Cody Weigand will all have an impact on the field for the Wildcats this fall according to Bigby.

With just a few practices under their belt, Bigby likes what he sees thus far, "The team is starting to click and gel into a unit. It has been an interesting transition from 11 man football to eight-man football, but the players are getting the hang of it and getting excited for the upcoming games. I'm hoping that we open some eyes."

As early as it is in the season, some things have really impressed the head coach, "The Leadership has impressed me so far. We have a great group of seniors and juniors as a nucleus, and I believe that with their leadership, we will be having a great year."

Making the move to eight-player football is a unique experience for all involved. "As a new group to eight-man we have high expectations. We need to come together as a unit and the leaders need to take the reins and hopefully our expectations will be met. The upperclassman have voiced their goals and we will be doing everything in our power to achieve those goals."

Where will that leadership come from, "Mikkel Rider will be our Offensive leader. He is the QB and will be taking the reins on the team. Amari Stanley and Darrius Longknife will be leading the air attack, I am looking towards Clay Adams and Cody Wiegand for our ground attack and with Dalray Begay, Mike King and Thunder Bigby on the line, I am looking for a lot from these players."
