Lady Cat Volleyball Team performs well at Season Opining Malta Invitational

September 1, 2021

It was a busy day of Pool Play and Tournament action Saturday afternoon at the Malta Volleyball Invitational. The Lady Cats were excited to get on the floor and see what they could do. There was plenty going on throughout the day, but the girls did take some time to get a nice team photo together.

The Harlem Lady Cats were more than ready to get their 2021 Volleyball season started in Malta this past weekend. The Lady Cats sent both their Junior Varsity and Varsity teams to compete in the Annual Pre Season Malta Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

The Malta Invitational has proven to be a great way for teams to find their rhythm heading into the Conference schedule. Tournament format features two pools with each team playing the others in single set matches. Then, based on record the teams will be seeded for a Tournament at the end of the day.

The Lady Cats began the day taking on host and District 2B conference foe, the Malta M-ettes. In a back and forth set both teams had their chance but in the end the M-ettes were able to secure a victory.

A good test early for sure for the Lady Cats. Harlem is young this year but they have solid leadership at the top that will surely bring the team together.

In match number two the Lady Cats found another familiar opponent on the other side of the court as they faced off against the District 1B Rocky Boy Morning Stars. Match number two was very similiar to the first with both teams making runs at each other. This time around it was the Lady Cats that put the final point on the board to earn a hard fought 25-23 set win.

In the final Pool play match of the day the Lady Cats faced off against Class C Powerhouse Circle. While the Lady Cats battled for every point and dove for every ball it was Circle that picked up the 25-19 set win.

In the first match of tournament play the Lady Cats took on the North Country Mavericks of the District 3C. North Country took control early in set number one and cruised to a 25-12 win over Harlem. In set number two the Lady Cats made a statement and fought back for a tough 25-24 set win.

Harlem closed out the day with a two set sweep of District 2B rival Poplar 25-9, 25-10. Overall Head Coach Kim Faulkinberry was pleased with her teams showing, "All in all it was a good first outing of the season. As coaches, we saw areas that needed to be worked on to improve.

Faulkinberry breaks it down some more, "We had one set that nobody was really ready to play against North Country, but we bounced back and took a set from them.

The Lady Cats will next take the court this Thursday when they head west to Conrad to challenge the District 1B Cowgirls. They will then head to St. Labre Saturday morning for double header against the Lady Braves.

They Lady Cats return home to play their first match of the new season on Thursday, September 9 when they will welcome the North Country Mavericks to town.
