Lady Cats best Lodge Grass 55-37, fall to Huntley

The Harlem Lady Cats were in Billings this past weekend at the Class B Tip Off Tournament being played on the campus of Lockwood High School. The tournament featured several top tier teams from the District 2B, 3B and 4B including Poplar, Wolf Point, St. Labre, Huntley Project, Lodge Grass and Shepherd.

Harlem began the weekend with a game against the Lodge Grass Indians Friday afternoon. Sophomore Emma Billmayer drained on from beyond the arc to go along with a nine point first quarter effort from senior Taya Trottier in helping the Lady Cats storm out to a 20-6 lead after eight minutes of action.

Senior Chloe Messerly had a strong second quarter for the Lady Cats scoring six points in the paint. Harlem saw their 14 point lead shrink by two but still maintained a comfortable 31-19 advantage at the intermission.

Trottier again led the way to start the second half adding eight points to her game total. The Lady Cats again saw their lead trimmed but were maintaining the cushion for the most part.

The Lady Cats led 42-33 at the start of the third quarter and after seeing the Indians cut into their lead in quarter number two and three, the offense again began to find its mark. Billmayer scored six points in the fourth quarter, Trottier added six of her own and the defense held the Indians to just four points down the stretch. The strong fourth quarter effort paved the way for a 55-37 win over Lodge Grass.

Trottier led the Lady Cat attack with 27 points on the night. Billmayer scored 10 in the contest and Messerly nine for the Lady Cats.

Saturday the Lady Cats were back on the court set to take on the District 4B Huntley Project Red Devils. The Lady Cats started strong getting five points early on from Messerly as they trailed just 11-9 after the first quarter. The Red Devil lead ballooned to nine in the second, 30-21 with Messerly scoring four more.

Huntley Project maintained the nine point cushion in the third quarter 44-35. The Lady Cats got a solid second half effort from Billmayer with a couple of three balls and eight points from Trottier but the Red Devils caught fire down the stretch handing the Lady Cats a 73-51 setback.

Messerly led the way with 18 points in the contest followed by Trottier with 16. Billmayer finished with 13 markers as Harlem fell to 2-1 on the season.
