Santa's Sleigh Overflows with Generosity

December 22, 2021

Santa's Sleigh is filled to over-flowing with 665 total items donated by families of children attending Meadowlark Elementary School. The canned and boxed food items will be used by the Chinook Community Christmas Club to assemble Christmas dinner food baskets for families in need.

Last year as fourth graders, the class of 2029 won the ice cream and bragging rights with 140 items packed into Santa's sleigh. Now, as fifth graders in Mrs. Lesa MacLeod's class, the group retained their crown and even surpassed their previously collected amount. Students at Meadowlark Elementary School collected a combined total of 665 canned and boxed food items that will be used by the Chinook Community Christmas Club to assemble Christmas dinner food baskets.

With 177 items, Mrs. MacLeod's fifth graders were repeat winners in the school's Fill the Sleigh competition. As their reward, they have earned a root beer float party. About her class' victory, Mrs. MacLeod said, "I'm excited for them because they were working hard to accomplish the win!"

In second place, Mrs. Janelle Deanon's sixth graders contributed 150 items. Even though Mrs. Amanda Davies has the most populous class, her third graders came in third with 113.

The food donations were picked up on December 16 by representatives from the Chinook Community Christmas Club. Each year, the Club places angel tags with information for gifts on the angel tree at Finley's Food Farm. The club also circulated a memo to parents on November 1, asking for help in identifying children in need. The memo further inquired whether the identified person might also like a food basket. Using the items collected in the Fill the Sleigh competition and supplemented with other comestibles for a Christmas dinner, these baskets will be assembled and distributed to families needing a little extra assistance during the holidays.
