Schoen wins Choteau Invitational, Lady Cats in Billings

January 19, 2022

Chinook junior Tyler Schoen has had himself quite a year on the mat so far. He began the season facing some of the stiffest competition in the state in Havre. His experiences led to a couple runner up finishes and Saturday in Choteau culminated with a championship in the 170 pound weight class.

The Chinook Sugarbeeter and Harlem Wildcat wrestling teams were in Choteau this past weekend for the Bulldog Classic. The Harlem Lady Cat wrestling team made the trip south to take part in the Billings West High School Girls Mixer.

Overall it was a stellar weekend on the mat for Blaine County athletes. Chinook junior Tyler Schoen won the 170 pound weight class in Choteau. Senior Wyatt Dunbar added to the Chinook haul with a third place finish at 285 pounds. Senior Drake Berreth had a great weekend on the mat as well, finishing fifth at 152 pounds.

In Billings the Lady Cats finished fifth as a team and were represented by four wrestlers on the mat. Freshman Izzy Baker finished second at 113 pounds. Junior Amelia Blackcrow was second at 145 pounds and freshman Ihte Stiffarm was fourth at 152 pounds. Sophomore Kaitlyn Johnson competed for the Lady Cats at 126 pounds.

Schoen has worked as hard as anyone in the room and finally had things go his way in Choteau. He began the tournament with a win over Ethan Sullivan of Cut Bank by pinfall (0:49). Schoen followed that up with a quarterfinal win over Conrad's Trysten Robertson, again by fall at 1:48.

The semifinal round pitted Schoen against Saint Ignatius/Charlo wrestler, Canyon Sargent. Schoen wouldn't get the pin, but was dominant in securing a Major Decision 12-1 win to advance to the 170 pound final.

In the Championship match, Schoen had to battle and was successful in every way, securing his second Major Decision win in a row to claim the championship with a MD 10-0 win over Max Hannum of Thompson Falls.

Dunbar was once again a podium finisher for the 'Beeters, finishing third at 285 pounds. Dunbar went 3-1 in Choteau to earn his place.

Berreth has consistently wrestled well but has often found himself opposite the states very best in the 152 pound weight class. Berreth persevered in Choteau going 3-2 to finish fifth.

The Lady Cats did very well in Billings and continue to bring home team trophies. Girls wrestling is still in its infancy, but those competing are very talented. Freshman Izzy Baker went 2-1 and finished second at 113. Junior Amelia Blackcrow was second at 145 pounds, falling in back to back matches by decision Billings Seniors Gracy Jones. Freshman Ihte Stiffarm went 1-2 , finishing third at 152 pounds.

The 'Beeters will host a mixer this Friday and will take that time to recognize their Seniors on Senior Night. Saturday the Wildcat and Chinook wrestlers will be in Harlem for the Wildcat Invitational and their Senior Night.
