Longhorns Edge Turner boys 49-48 at the Buzzer

Fort Benton Girls top Turner 57-37, Chester/Joplin-Inverness Sweeps Turner Teams

Turner senior Trever Kimmel converted 10-11 from the charity stripe and scored a team high 18 points in their heart breaking 49-48 loss to Fort Benton Friday night in Turner.

The Turner Tornado girls and boys basketball teams hosted the Fort Benton Longhorns this past Friday in District 9C action. The Longhorns got the better of the Turner girls 57-37 in the first game. Fort Benton needed a buzzer beating three-point bomb to edge the Turner boys 49-48 in a heart breaker. Saturday the teams were in Chester where the girls fell to the Hawks 60-39 and the boys were defeated 64-23.

Turner junior Dakota Krass did all she could early on to help the Turner girls stay in striking distance of the visiting Longhorns. Krass connected twice from beyond the arc and scored all 15 of Turners first quarter points.

Fort Benton held a 19-15 advantage to start the second and were able to add to their lead before the break, doubling up the Tornadoes in the second quarter 10-5 to lead by nine at the break. Fort Benton built on the lead throughout the second half securing a 57-37 win over the Tornadoes. Krass led all scorers with 26 points in the contest.

Saturday freshman Cassidy Grabofsky scored 13 and Krass added 12 in a tough road loss to the Hawks. Turner trailed 14-7 at the end of one and 32-20 by the intermission. Chester/J-I built on the lead in the third quarter, eventually dealing a 60-39 setback to the Turner girls.

The Tornado boys found themselves in a classic, Friday night at home against the visiting Longhorns. Senior Trever Kimmel connected twice from distance in the opening frame and scored nine. Sophomore Trent Billmayer added a triple to help the Tornadoes grab an early 17-14 lead.

Turner added eleven more in the second with freshman Carson Maloney contributing five sending the Tornadoes to halftime with a slim 28-27 advantage.

Turner junior Dakota Krass did all she could to help the Tornadoes stay close to the Longhorns early, scoring all 15 of Turners first quarter points Friday night.

Both teams spent the third quarter trading baskets in a closely contested battle. Maloney connected from beyond the arc and Kimmel added five more points to his total, but the Longhorns took a 41-38 lead into the fourth quarter.

Defense was the name of the game down the stretch with both teams limiting the good looks by the others offense.

Kimmel was clutch from the charity stripe all night, converting 10-11 including two huge free throws with :48.3 remaining to give Turner a 47-46 lead. Billmayer added a free throw with :08.3 remaining to give Turner a 48-46 lead.

Following a time out the Longhorns buried a triple with :01.1 remaining to secure a 49-48 win over the Tornadoes. Kimmel led the way with 18 points while Billmayer and Maloney each finished with 10.

Saturday in Chester the Tornadoes struggled to get anything going. Chester/J-I built a 17-3 lead at the end of one and led 41-9 by the intermission. In the end it was the Hawks 64-23 over the Tornadoes. Sophomore Ryan Doyle paced the Turner offense with six points.
