Dads & Kids Fishing Day a Huge Success

July 6, 2022

The Annual Dads and Kids Fishing Day was a huge success this year with outstanding numbers to prove it. The Annual Derby sponsored by the Fort Belknap Child Support Program welcomed more than 65 anglers to participate in a day full of fun.

Event organizer, Myron Hoops, a case specialist for the Child Protective Support Program commented on the numbers, “We were down in numbers pretty good the last two years due to Covid, but we were back up in numbers this year with at least 65 registered.”

The Dads and Kids Fishing Derby had it all, taking place at Snake Butte Reservoir on Friday, June 24th. Registration took place from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. with four age groups being filled. The four groups included Age 6 & under: 7-12 years of age, 13-17 years of age and Adult. The Event was also a Drug and Alcohol-free celebration.

The weather cooperated perfectly with sunny skies warm temperatures. The fish cooperated as well as nearly every angler was able to land a fish or two. Anglers were asked to bring their own bait and poles.

In addition to a fun day together with friends and family and Dad, cash prizes were awarded every half hour to winners of a lucky drawing. As the day progressed fisherman brought their fish to event officials to be properly logged and weighed.

At the conclusion of the day the totals were added up and the winners were announced. In the 0-6 Age group the biggest fish caught was a 3-pound 2-ounce monster by William “Lil Bill” Main III. Second place went to Nyla Dugan with a 3-pound 1 ounce fish. With the third largest catch of the day in the age group was Teagan Messerly with a 2-pound 8-ounce catch.

For the 7-12 age group the winner was Landon Trottier with a landed fish of 2 pounds 13 ounces. Landon King’s 1 pound 10-ounce fish was good for second place while Jesse Messerly finished third.

For the 13–17 year old age group Taeson Doney landed a 1 pound 9-ounce fish to win the group. Taymond Stiffarm was listed as second and Corey Morgan Jr. third both with fish of the same size, 1 pound 9 ounces.

In the Adult (18+) Division Chucky Lamebull landed the biggest catch, weighing in at 3.16 pounds. Myron Trottier was second (3.07 pounds). Ed “Buster” Moore at 3.03 pounds was third.

At the end of the day a good time was had by all, and everyone can start looking forward to the next Dads & Kids fishing day in 2023.
