Harlem School Board Prepares for 2022-23 School Year

The Harlem School Board has begun the process of preparing for the start of the 2022-23 School Year with recent actions at their May and June School Board Meetings. The following is a summary of the certified May 17 meeting minutes and the draft minutes from the June 27 meeting. June Minutes will be certified at the July meeting.

The Harlem school system was left with several vacancies to fill following the conclusion of the 2021-22 school year and general business still needed to be addressed as well. The School Board is currently in negotiations with the Teachers on reaching a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the coming years, but while those negotiations continue, other business is being addressed.

After the May meeting was called to order a motion was made by John Young to approve the following memberships: Montana High School association, Montana School Board Association, School Administrators of Montana, Montana Cooperative Services, National association of Federally Inspected Schools, Indian Impacted Schools of Montana, National Indian Impacted Schools Association and the Montana Rural Education Association. Motion was seconded by Kathleen Adams and passed,

Motion was made by Mike King to hire Erik Murri, Kim Faulkinberry and Eleanor Doucette as Gear Up Summer School teachers for $25/hour. Kathleen Adams seconded, and motion carried. Motion was made by Mike King to pay Ken Bigby an hourly rate of $41.95 to teach the summer Traffic Education Program. Kathleen Adams seconded, and motion carried.

Cassie Handran, Board Clerk administered the Oath of Office to newly elected trustees. Motion was made by Kathleen Adams to nominate Jonathan Walker as Board Chairman, Mike King seconded, and motion carried. Motion was made by Kathleen Adams to nominated Mike King as Board Vice-Chairperson. Motion was seconded by Leslie Horn and motion carried.

Mike King motioned to appoint Cassie Handran as Board Clerk, Leslie Horn seconded, and the motion carried. Motion was made by Mike King to authorize the Superintendent, Business Manager/Clerk and Board Chair to sign on the Harlem School district #12 Blaine County Treasurer account for claims/payroll, Bank of Harlem, and Harlem Student Association account. Motion was seconded by Leslie Horn and motion carried. Motion was made by Kathleen Adams to allow Blaine County to run the 2023 Trustee Election. Mike King seconded, and the motion carried.

2022-23 Individual Transportation Contracts and Bus Route approval. A motion was made by Mike King to approve contracts for Rae Jones, Bette Jo Snider, Jennifer Hellman and Trisha Gruszie. Motion was seconded by Kathleen Adams and motion carried. Kathleen Adams motioned for the school board to approve the renewal plan rates for Blue Cross Blue Shield for Health Insurance. The Hartford Group for retiree insurance plan and Guardian for dental, vision, life/AD&D and disability for the 2022-23 school year. Leslie Horn seconded, and motion carried. Kathleen Adams motioned to add Kathryn Long as a authorized substitute teacher for $17.46/hour to the sub/extra help/volunteer list with the District reserving the right to withdraw the offer based on the results of a background check and age requirement. Leslie Horn seconded, and motion passed.

The next scheduled board meeting is set for July 19,2022 at 6:00 p.m.
