Fort Belknap Fair Set for August 12

August 3, 2022

The Fort Belknap 4-H Fair is scheduled for Friday, August 12 at the Wasay Wakpa Arena Grounds in Lodge Pole. Bidders, businesses, and the public are all invited to attend. Prior to that date, several other events will also occur.

In order to get ready for the fair, a rodeo grounds clean-up will take place on Monday, August 8, beginning at 6:00 p.m. After the clean-up session, 4-H members will engage in Steer Project Poster Design. These posters will inform visitors about each project animal—sharing information such as the animal’s name, breed, weight gain, diet, lessons learned, and other fun facts.

Wednesday, August 10 has been designated as Market Animal Weigh-in Day. All 4-H members entering livestock are asked to get their animals weighed from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Every one of these preparations is geared towards Fair Day. “Grow with the Green” is this year’s chosen theme. According to Fort Belknap Reservation Ag Extension Agent, Liz Werk, that theme is meant to promote the idea of growing and learning through 4-H. “We have a lot of new, young showmen, so that is a difference this year. We also won’t have any processing support this year. Still, the kids have worked hard and have earned the community’s support,” Werk said.

Werk went on to say, “Without the parents’ support and the kids’ enthusiasm, we wouldn’t be here. We had a rough start this year. COVID steered many kids away, and while March allowed some re-opening, we also had challenges in our office to address. Overall, it has been a tough year.”

On August 12, the Market Livestock Showmanship and Judging will begin at 9:00 a.m. The Livestock Auction will follow at noon. The early start time will enable anyone interested to attend the pow wow later that evening if they choose.

Werk anticipates that twelve beef will make weight and sell. She reported that no hogs or sheep will go through the sale ring.

Anyone with questions is encouraged to contact Werk at the Fort Belknap Extension Office by calling 406-353-2656.
