October 5, 2022

Junior Quentin Edwards (65) and senior Flint Annis (82) corral the Pirates shift quarterback.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters added St. Regis Mullen to their schedule this past Friday to make up for the game lost due to the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds having their season canceled.

The Sugarbeeters made the most of the contest, defeating the 4-2 Pirates in a downpour by utilizing a crushing defense and a punishing rushing attack to control the tempo and clock.

The No. 4 Sugarbeeters and the Pirates of St. Regis /Mullen decided to meet in the middle and play the game in Lincoln. The Pirates play their home games in Mullen, which is in Idaho. Chinook traveled 221.3 miles to cover their portion of the trip while the Pirates traveled 187.2 miles.

The Sugarbeeters kicked off to St. Regis to begin the contest and the defense quickly stepped up recording an 8 yard loss in the Pirates backfield and forcing a punt.

Senior Running Back, Tyler Schoen, picked up 8, 6 and 15 yards on his first three carries setting the offense up deep in Pirate territory. Senior Quarterback Levi Jensen pulled the hand off from Schoen and headed right beating the Pirate defense to the pylon for an 11 yard Touchdown Run. Chinook missed the conversion attempt and took a 6-0 lead.

St. Regis responded almost immediately marching down the field and scoring on a 20 yard touchdown pass. The Pirates added the conversion to take an 8-6 lead over the 'Beeter's midway through the first quarter.

Sophomore Landen Beck wasted little time in getting the Sugarbeeters back the lead, returning the ensuing kickoff 78 yards for an impressive run in the rain and a 12-8 Chinook lead midway through the opening stanza.

St. Regis took over at their own 19 yard line and after a couple penalties and a sack from Schoen they were forced to punt the ball back to the Sugarbeeters. Chinook was called for holding on the return and started to the next position at their own 4 yard line.

The 'Beeter offense then turned to Schoen once again to power the rushing attack. Schoen is a big bruising back that punishes defenders at the point of contact, delivering massive stiffarms that eventually take a toll on would be tacklers.

Schoen and the offense crossed midfield, but penalties and a muffed snap led to a turnover on downs. St. Regis took over at their own 24 yard line to begin their next drive. Four plays later 'Beeter junior Defensive Tackle, Quentin Edwards, pressured the Pirate Quarterback forcing a fumble. Senior Daniel MacLeod quickly jumped on the loose ball and recovering the fumble for the 'Beeters.

Schoen continued to attack the Pirate defense head on. With the 'Beeters at the Pirate 20, Schoen took the hand off from Jensen, eared to his right, delivered a thunderous stiffarm to the defensive back on his way to the end zone and an 18-8 Sugarbeeter lead.

The score remained the same to start the third quarter with the 'Beeters receiving the kickoff. Schoen gained 40 yards on the drive; Jensen added 10 yards on the ground as well setting the offense up at the 11 yard line. Jensen pulled the handoff from Schoen, drifted to his right and found sophomore Oliver Standiford for the touchdown pass. Schoen added the conversion run to make the score 26-8.

The Pirates scored quickly and then recovered a 'Beeter fumble to set their offense up in good position. Moments later they scored again cutting the 'Beeter lead to 26-20.

Schoen found the end zone on the 'Beeters next possession on a six yard scamper and Jensen added the conversion to stretch the lead back to 34-20. St. Regis again quickly responded with another score to again trim the 'Beeter advantage to six.

The offense then orchestrated a masterful, time consuming ball control, 10 play drive that included a couple of penalties on the defense and resulted in a seven yard touchdown run and conversion from Schoen to provide the final points in a 42-26 'Beeter win.

'Beeter senior Tyler Schoen continued his assault on opponent defenses this past Friday in Lincoln. Schoen carried the ball 36 times for 281 yards and three touchdowns in Chinooks 42-26 win over Saint Regis/Mullen.

The Sugarbeeters got a huge effort from Schoen. The senior carried the ball 36 times for 281 yards and three touchdown. Jensen added 64 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Defensively Schoen recorded 15 total tackles including five behind the line of scrimmage, Standiford finished with 11 tackles. Edwards had eight, including a sack and Hasler finished with seven.

Head Coach Mike Jones came away very satisfied with the weekends results, "I thought it was great getting a game on a bye week. I thought our offensive line looked the best it has all year. They had some good athletes. Defensively we played really well just need to clean up some coverage stuff. Looking forward to this week. We need to establish some short passing and play action. Defensively we need to make sure we are communicating and filling gaps."

Chinook will head to Rocky Boy this Thursday and then conclude the regular season on Friday, October 14 at home against the No. 3 ranked Belt Huskies to decide the Northern C Champion.
