It's baaack! Harlem Library's Wine and Cheese Fundraiser set for December 7

November 30, 2022

After two years with no Holiday Wine and Cheese Fundraiser during the holidays Friends of the Harlem Public Library are looking forward to hosting this year's return event. The 2022 fundraiser will be held on Wednesday, December 7 from 6pm-8pm at the Harlem Library. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the library.

After a two year hiatus (yes, 'due to COVID') the Wine and Cheese Fundraiser to support Harlem Public Library is back. Inaugurated in 2013 the holiday fundraiser helps support some of the local library's programs and special needs purchases that would not otherwise be possible. Since the Friends first holiday event a number of major items has been procured for the local library from a 'wish list' generated by library staff and patrons.

This year's event is set for Wednesday, December 7, 6-8pm, at the Harlem Public Library. The first event offered 50 tickets, this year 80 tickets will be available. Organizers say over the years the holiday fundraiser generates in the neighborhood of $2,000. The group raised about $12,000 through the holiday events and other fundraisers, toward the purchase of new library shelving. The new shelving is now in place.

Karolee Cronk is the Event Chair for the Friends group. She said of the event, "There will be something for everyone. It's not just about wine and cheese." There will be live and silent auctions offering all sorts of items donated by local supporters and businesses. The event is also well known for its selections of edible holiday treats available during the event (covered by the ticket purchase). Karolee noted, "Some folks just come to sit, visit and sample all the homemade goodies." There are also door prizes and a 50/50 raffle.

The wine tasting aspect of the event dates back to 2013 when James Hodgson, at that time operating the Sage Brush Flats Winery, suggested a wine and cheese tasting event with the winery donating the wine. The tradition still continues but wines are now donated by numerous benefactors. In addition to wine tasting there will also be wine and cheese pairings which provide opportunities to learn which cheeses compliment certain types of wines.

More than just fundraising

Karolee has coordinated the Wine and Cheese event since it started almost ten years ago She said of this year's event, "People are looking forward to a reason to get out and be with other people. The social aspects of the event are especially important since we couldn't host the event the past couple of years due to concerns about COVID. Raising funds to support the wish list of the library is an added benefit to an opportunity to come to the library for an evening and socialize."

Holiday decorations, some of which will be for sale, are also an important aspect of the Wine and Cheese Fundraiser. Each of the prior fundraisers was themed and this year's is "An Old Fashioned Christmas." Library Director Colleen Brommer said, "I think folks enjoy coming to see the decorations and take home new ideas or decorative items they purchase. And I'm happy to say they also enjoy supporting the programs and helping meet the needs of the library."
