Thunderbirds Drop Three to Fall to 1-4 on the season

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds welcomed the District 1B Rocky Boy Northern Stars to the Thunderdome in their home opener last Tuesday. This marked the first meeting between the two teams since Rocky Boy left the District 9C following the 2009 season.

The Thunderbirds fought hard and trailed just 26-18 at the break but in the end fell 72-38. Freshman Jesus Aguirre scored 13 to lead the Thunderbirds. Senior Daniel Henry added 11.

Friday the T-Birds were in Gildford for their District 9C opener against the North Star Knights.

The Knights jumped out to an early 16-7 lead. The Thunderbirds turned in a solid second quarter effort, trimming two points off the deficit to trail 28-21 at the break.

The second half was all North Star. The Knights scored 19 points in each of the final two quarters to hand the Thunderbirds a 66-43 loss. Henry paced the Thunderbird attack with 17 points on the night.

Saturday at home against the Big Sandy Pioneers the Thunderbirds were hoping for a different outcome. Henry and Aguirre each connected from distance early in helping the Thunderbirds stay close. Big Sandy led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The Pioneers opened a 26-21 lead at halftime Both Henry and Aguirre again connected from beyond the arc. The Thunderbirds lost ground in the third quarter and trailed 42-29 into the fourth quarter.

Big Sandy maintained their advantage down the stretch and secured a 53-40 win over the Thunderbirds. Henry scored 14 points on the night to lead the Thunderbirds while aguirre finished with eight in the contest.
