Chinook Tennis Continues to Shine on the Courts Despite the Cold

The Chinook duo of senior Torin Cecrle and senior Lexi Pitkanen went 4-0 this weekend between Havre and Chester

The Chinook Sugarbeeter Tennis Team battled a bitterly cold week by getting some gym practice in around two successful away matches. Practices were focused on improving groundstrokes, which helped lead to outstanding team play.

First up, on Tuesday, the team traveled to Havre where they swept their matches, going 15-0. Junior Mya Berreth led the way with a strong showing winning her singles matches 6-0 and 6-1. Sophomore Rilee Molyneaux won her matches 6-1 and 6-4. Jenna Liddle had a similarly strong showing winning 6-1 and 6-1. Freshman Gracie Skoyen used experience from last week and good practices to pick up wins of 6-3 and 6-2. Sophomore Ashlyn Jensen put in extra work taking three single matches in impressive form at 6-0, 6-2, 6-0.

The winning continued with the doubles matches. Senior veterans Lexie Pitkanen and Torin Cecrle showed their expertise and earned solid victories of 6-0 and 6-2. Freshman Jeni Mord and Falyn Cecrle also rose to the occasion earning their first wins as a team with match scores of 6-1 and 6-4.

Sophomore Ashlyn Jensen won all three of her singles matches going 6-0, 6-2 and 6-0.

On Friday, the squad headed to Chester where, despite frozen faces, fingers, and toes, the team continued their hot play with 13 victories to just one loss.

Berreth earned a singles win of 6-2 and teamed up with Liddle for a 6-1 doubles victory. Liddle dropped her singles match 5-7 in a hard-fought battle. Molyneaux earned solid singles victories of 6-4 and 6-1. Paycee Leo battled for singles wins of 6-4 and 6-4, while Jensen won 6-0 and Skoyen grabbed another win at 6-2.

Pitkanen and Torin Cecrle swept their doubles matches 6-0 and 7-5. The team tried some new combos in doubles competition that proved to be highly successful. Mord and Falyn Cecrle combined for a 6-1 victory, while Falyn Cecrle and Skoyen earned the 6-2 win. Mord and Jensen won their doubles match 6-4.

The Sugarbeeters traveled to Fort Benton for matches on Tuesday. Those results will be shared in next week's edition.
