Aaniiih Nakoda College 2023 Commencement Speaker

Aaniiih Nakoda College is celebrating the 2023 Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 5, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. in the Harlem High School Gymnasium. Dr. Walter C. Fleming is a professor and Department Head of the Department of Native American Studies at Montana State University, Bozeman. He has taught at MSU for over 40 years and has been department Head for over 20 years. He is the longest-serving faculty member in any Native Studies program in the Montana University System.

Dr. Fleming was born at Crow Agency, Montana and raised on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation and is an enrolled member of the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas, where he is known as "Wa-sah-suk" or "Light-lying-down." He is a member of the White Bear Clan.

Dr. Fleming graduated from Colstrip High School, Dawson Community College, Eastern Montana College, and Montana State University. His doctorate is from the University of Kansas. Fleming is the author of three books, eleven book chapters, and many articles. His research interests include Montana Indian Cultures and histories. Dr. Fleming is a twice recipient of the Indian Educator of the Year by the Montana Indian Education Association and was an awardee of the Montana Governor's Humanities Award. He lives in Bozeman with his extended family.
