August 9, 2023

“Let’s Celebrate!” Stop by the library Wednesday, August 16 any time from 4:00 - 6:00 P.M. for an open house. This event is celebrating 112 new high-quality children’s books we received through a grant from The Pilcrow Foundation. The Pilcrow Foundation supports rural public library communities through the Children’s Book Project. The Friends of the Library partnered as local sponsors of the grant by donating one third of the funds used to purchase the new books. These additions to our children’s collection include picture books, early readers, each chapter books, juvenile fiction and nonfiction selections as well as young adult titles. Come and see these wonderful new books!

The Friends of the Library and the library staff and board are also celebrating our community and it’s continued support of our library.

Join us as we extend our appreciation to our supporters. Refreshments will be served. “Let’s Celebrate!”

Congratulations to the Summer Reading grand prize winners! In the age 0-Kindergarten group Sean Stiffarm was the winner. Sarah Pursley was the winner in Grades 1-8 and Mahina Cutstherope won in the teens/adult category.

The Book Challenge for August is to read a book set in a school. Come and choose a selection from our display.

If you are looking for new recipes ideas check out Volume 3 “Magnolia Table” cookbook by Joanna Gaines. The author hopes “the recipes and stories will feel like an invitation to pause” and that “this is a collection I hope you’ll savor.”

Liv Constantine has written “The Senator’s Wife.” After the death of both their spouses, DC philanthropist Sloane Chase and Senator Whit Montgomery are ready to move on and settle down with each other. Sloane prepares for a hip replacement, a reminder of the lupus she has managed since her twenties. The couple hires Athena Karras as a home health aide to assist post-surgery. When Sloane begins to mysteriously deteriorate she begins to suspect Athena. Is she having paranoia or is Athena a real threat?

“Good Night, Irene” is by Luis Alberto Urrea. In this historical fiction story Irene Woodward leaves an abusive fiancé to enlist in the Red Cross to aid the troops in WWII. There she makes fast friends with Dorothy Dunford and together they are part of the Donut Dollies, who command Clubmobiles at the front lines bringing a taste of home to the soldiers. There she meets and falls in love with an American fighter pilot. Her fervent hope is that all three will make it safely home.

Elly Griffiths latest mystery is “The Last Remains.” Builders discover a human skeleton and they call in archaeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway. The bones turn out to be modern, the remains of archaeology student Emily Pickering. Suspicion falls on Cathbad, Emily’s tutor and Ruth’s friend. As the investigation proceeds Cathbad disappears and the trail leads to the flint mines in Grime’s Graves. Can Ruth find Cathbad and exonerate him?
