Havre Trails Challenges Area Residents to Get Outdoors and Win Some Prizes in the Process

The Havre Trails Outdoor Challenge is back this summer, and the Trails crew encourage outdoor enthusiasts not only to participate but to explore the locations around our area that offer outdoor challenges and enter to win some prizes. The challenge period runs from May 16 - August 23, which is the date of Summer Brewfest.

Those interested in participating simply need to choose from the list of five outdoor challenges and bonus challenges, go to that location during the challenge period, take a photo of themselves at the designated landmark indicated in the checklist, and complete the challenge according to the directions. Photos need to be submitted to complete an entry. From there, luck will reign. For each challenge completed, the participant's name will be entered in a drawing to win one of the outdoor recreation-themed prizes. Several general prizes will be drawn at monthly drawings on Saturday, May 31; Saturday, June 28; Saturday, July 26; and Saturday, August 23. Additionally, grand prizes will be awarded at Brewfest on August 23. Participants who complete all of the challenges by Saturday morning will be entered into a drawing for one of the grand prizes.

The location for Challenge #1 is Beaver Creek Park. Here, a person needs to complete two out of five of the main trails in the park: 1) Rotary Canyon Trail, 2) Bear Paw Nature Trail, 3) Mt. Otis, 4) Normandy Coulee Frolf Course, and 5) Brough Coulee. Qualifying trail photo landmarks are one bench on each trail or one of the nine frolf baskets along the Normandy Coulee Frolf Course.

Challenge #2 is the City of Havre. Competitors will hike two of the three main trails in the city: 1) Baltrusch Trail, 2) Devlin Trail, 3) Milk River Levee, or 4) MSU-Northern Campus Trail. Photo landmarks on this challenge are one bench on each trail (Baltrusch and Devlin), the weir in the background on the (southwest) levee trail, or a photo with the large N and campus in the background (MSU-Northern).

Challenge #3 takes place at the Buttes. Hikers will tackle the Bullhook Butte Hike on Saddle Butte. The photo landmark for this challenge is a panorama of Havre from a high point on this land.

Rivers and Peaks are the highlight for Challenge #4. Outdoor enthusiasts should choose one of the following: a) Hike across the approximately one-mile Fresno Wildlife Management Area Levee. The photo landmark for this area is a selfie with the levee in the background. b) Hike the one-mile trail, visiting the Mission Canyon Overlook and Hole-in-the-Wall in the Little Rockies. The photo landmark is a view from the overlook that includes the hiker.

Challenge #5 involves historic walks. For this challenge, hikers will complete one of the following: a) Visit the historic Nez Perce National Historical Park/Bear Paw Battlefield south of Chinook and walk the approximately one-mile self-guided trail while learning about its history. The photo landmark on this challenge is one of the historical information signs in the park. Alternatively, hikers might consider tackling the 3.6-mile Sulphur Springs Hiking Trail near the Morony Dam in Great Falls. Photo landmark on this trek is one of two lookout points along the trail that provide views of the Missouri River.

Each completed challenge will earn the participant one entry in the prize drawings. Prizes in the general (monthly) category include the following:
