We've Got The County Covered

James R. Cook

The family of James R. Cook are deeply saddened to announce his passing on January 9, 2026.

Life with Jim was never dull-it was an adventure. He was complex, charming, charismatic, and deeply caring, with a mischievous spark that was uniquely his. Jim had a way of lighting up a room the moment he entered it. Strangers were simply friends he hadn't met yet, and he could connect with anyone through his stories, his ever-present smile, and his unforgettable, one-of-a-kind laugh.

Jim loved to tease, but always with a twinkle in his eye and kindness at heart. He was gracious, generous, and knowledgeable-whether coaching, cooking, or quietly helping someone figure something out for the first time. He delighted in teaching others, from walking a friend through how to cook the perfect prime rib to showing a child how to bait a hook. Our Thanksgivings often included more than just immediate family, because Jim believed the table was always big enough. His prime rib and Yorkshire pudding became legendary, but what he loved most was what surrounded the meal: good wine, good friends, and his family.

Jim was born in Sterling, Colorado, in 1941 and moved to Seattle at the age of two. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1959, where he served as student band director, played the saxophone, and formed many lifelong friendships. His love of music continued as he performed at Seattle nightclubs with the band Tiny Tony and the Statics.

Jim spent the remainder of his working life in the printing industry-first as a printer, then as a printing press salesman for A&M International. When A&M closed, Jim founded Emerald City Graphics, serving as CEO until selling the company in 1996 to Consolidated Graphics.

Retirement allowed Jim to fully embrace his favorite passions: hunting, fishing, and being on the water. Jim spent many years hunting for deer and pheasants in the Blaine County area. He enjoyed Chinook and the friends and people he met. He especially enjoyed spending time with our son, Russ, teaching him the finer points of outdoorsmanship, cooking, and story telling. Russ was the light of Jim's life.

Jim is survived by his wife, Melody O'Brien; his son, Russ (Katie); and his granddaughter, Ashley. He will be remembered for his laughter, his generosity, his playful spirit, and the joy he brought to everyone lucky enough to know him.
