Meadowlark Students Win Awards

With the arrival of March, the school year's third quarter winds down and spring fever begins to heat up. Given those conditions, this round of monthly award winners might be considered a group that managed to rein in their energy in such a way that they channeled 'rowdy' into enthusiasm, determination, and positivity.

On Thursday, March 26, Meadowlark Elementary School held an awards assembly to recognize that vivacious group. Among the awards presented were a Recess Award, a Mountain Mover Award, and the Principal's Award. Students of the Month also received honors, as did students earning Accelerated Reader accolades. A Golden Plunger Award even went to the cleanest bathroom. Furthermore, several students in Mrs. Edwards' first grade class collected medals in bronze, silver, and gold after participating in a reading incentive during the month.

According to Principal Danelle Gibson, the Recess Award recognizes students for showing respect and good sportsmanship at recess. Recess Awards were conferred upon Harper Crane, Maggie Eggleston, Emmett Hinebauch, Jettson Nordboe, and Rainee Skoyen, Bannen Stroebe, and Royce Stroebe.

The Mountain Mover Award, on the other hand, pays tribute to students for making improvements academically, behaviorally, or socially. Tipton Burcham, Shea Flynn, Scarlette Gerky, Bentley Reed, Jessica Sexton, and Drago Urbin distinguished themselves as Mountain Movers.

A related award, the Principal's Award is bestowed upon students who exhibit respect for school, self, and others. Those securing the Principal's Award were Christian Belyeu, Corbyn Bridle, Fallan Frey-Haluszka, Emmett Hinebauch, Jettson Nordboe, Josey Sather, and Harlo Weinheimer.

Another distinction, the Student of the Month title credits students for their outstanding effort, behavior, and academic performance. March's winners were McKenzie Fisher, Brynlee Nicholson, Brody Olson, Remi Reed, Landen Sederdahl, Rainee Skoyen and Raija Weinheimer.

Additionally, Scarlette Gerky, Spencer Gerky, Fallan Frey-Halluska, Isaac Kropf, Lyncoln Mord, and Brody Olson achieved Accelerated Reader (AR) Awards. Each of these Star Readers earned their Star and a t-shirt for meeting their reading goals. Through quizzes, goal setting, and personalized recommendations, AR is a program that intends to motivate students to read more. Studies show that as students increase their reading volume, they develop greater reading stamina, word recognition, and language comprehension skills. At Meadowlark Elementary, readers achieve star status after accumulating 100 points in the program, and for every subsequent 100 points, they gain a rainbow.

Finally, the girls' bathroom in the west wing was designated as the cleanest, once again winning the Golden Plunger Award.

As described by Gibson, these awards provide a method for incentivizing students and rewarding them for making a positive addition to the school environment.

In addition to the regular monthly awards, first and second graders received medals by participating in Reading Olympics. Lucas Whitney, Jenny Elliot, Gaya Silva, Brynlee Clark, Everett Goodrich, Harlo Weinheimer reached gold medal status; Bernadette Frye and Beatrice Harwood won silver medals; and Jaylyn Hoskinson, Kevin Caballero, McCoy Eggleston, Raelynn Dawson, Landen Sederdahl, Tobias Surber, Bentley Reed, Maggie Eggleston, and Tucker Urbin took home bronze.

Their teacher, Mrs. Tammy Edwards designed her students' reading challenge in the spirit of the Olympics. "It went from the start of February to the end of March. The kids had a sheet with 54 medals on it. For every AR test passed during this time, they colored a medal. Once they passed 18 tests, they secured a bronze medal. When they reached 36, they earned silver. And, they were awarded a gold if they got 54 or more. There were classroom prizes attached to each medal as well as the distinction of getting the medal. All students medaled, and lots of reading happened," Edwards reported.

"I love getting kids to read, and it's fun to mix things up sometimes," she added.
