Law Enforcement Torch Run® Brings the Flame of Hope Across Montana

Each year, law enforcement officers from across Montana lace up their running shoes, carry torches through their communities, and unite for a mission far greater than the miles ahead of them. The Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) serves as the largest public awareness and grassroots fundraising movement for Special Olympics around the world, helping create opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities to train, compete, and thrive.

Throughout the spring and summer, officers from local police departments, sheriff's offices, highway patrol agencies, corrections, probation and parole, and federal agencies participate in Torch Run legs across Montana. Officers are often joined by Special Olympics Montana athletes, volunteers, family members, and community supporters as they carry the "Flame of Hope" from community to community leading into the Special Olympics Montana State Summer Games.

The Flame of Hope symbolizes courage, inclusion, acceptance, and the power of opportunity. It represents the ongoing commitment to ensuring individuals with intellectual disabilities are seen, valued, included, and celebrated both on and off the playing field.

For many officers, the Law Enforcement Torch Run is more than just a fundraising event-it is a partnership built on respect, friendship, and advocacy. Law enforcement personnel across Montana volunteer countless hours throughout the year supporting Special Olympics Montana through events such as Polar Plunges®, Tip-A-Cops, Plane Pulls, community fundraisers, and local competitions.

Locally, Hill County's Torch Run efforts are led by Alex Esteves, who also serves as the Montana LETR Northeast Regional Coordinator. In this leadership role, Alex not only helps organize and support the local Torch Run efforts in Havre and surrounding communities but also works alongside officers across Northeast Montana to help strengthen and grow Law Enforcement Torch Run programs throughout the region. His role focuses on supporting fellow officers leading LETR initiatives, building community partnerships, and helping expand awareness and fundraising efforts that directly benefit Special Olympics Montana athletes.

The partnership between Special Olympics Montana and law enforcement has created lasting relationships that extend far beyond events. Officers often become coaches, mentors, volunteers, and lifelong supporters of the athletes they meet through the program.

As the Flame of Hope travels through Montana communities this season, residents are encouraged to cheer on the runners, support local fundraising efforts, and celebrate the athletes and officers who continue to build a more inclusive Montana together.
