Getting Involved in Local Leadership

We live in a great part of the state. Most of us can attest that we live here for a reason. We enjoy the things that we have here. However, strong communities don’t happen by accident. They are built by people who step up, get involved, and work together to make a difference. Local boards, committees, and volunteer leadership groups play a critical role in shaping the future of our towns, schools, and community spaces.

Serving on a board or committee can feel intimidating at first, but it’s one of the most impactful ways to contribute. Whether it’s a school board, local nonprofit, advisory council, or community project group, these organizations rely on engaged community members to provide ideas, direction, and support.

Montana State University Extension offers resources and education to help individuals become effective leaders. Through programs focused on local government, board development, and community engagement, Extension helps participants understand roles and responsibilities, how to run effective meetings, and how to make informed decisions. These skills are especially important in rural communities, where volunteers often wear many hats.

One of the most important things to understand about serving in a leadership role is that you don’t need to be an expert. You just need to be willing to learn and contribute. Strong boards benefit from a variety of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. Listening, asking questions, and working collaboratively are just as valuable as technical knowledge.

Getting started can be as simple as attending a meeting or reaching out to an organization you’re interested in. Many boards and committees are actively looking for new members and fresh ideas. Community projects, such as pools and parks, events, or local initiatives can also provide opportunities for short-term involvement that can lead to longer-term leadership roles. You may also feel the call to help by serving the community in other ways. Our local ambulance crews, fire departments, and civic groups could also use your skills and knowledge.

In our area, we have a strong tradition of neighbors helping neighbors. By getting involved in local leadership, you not only support important community efforts but also help build connections and strengthen the place we all call home.

If you’re interested in learning more about leadership opportunities or developing your skills, Montana State University Extension provides workshops, resources, and guidance to support individuals at every stage of involvement. Be watching for upcoming workshops hosted by MSU Extension here in Blaine County or stop by the Extension Office to learn more.

Your voice matters, and your involvement can help shape the future of our local counties.

Have a great week!
