Gary Martin Meland, a proud third-generation farmer and rancher, passed away peacefully under hospice care in Yuma, Arizona where he and his wife enjoyed spending winters. Born on September 20, 1948, to Sigurd and Mary Meland, Gary grew up with his roots firmly planted in the family farm north of Havre. After attending Cottonwood and Havre High School, he served his country in the National Guard from 1967-1973.
Gary's life was defined by his stewardship of the land and his devotion to his family. In 1984, Gary married Gloria Cook, gaining two children whom he loved and raised as his own. While he took great pride in his work, his greatest joy was found in his five granddaughters and three great grandchildren, with whom he shared countless happy hours.
A dedicated community leader, Gary spent his life giving back. He lent his time and exepertise to many organizations including the Wildhorse Fire Department and QRU, the Land & Mineral Owners Association, the Hill County Study Commissioner, the Havre School Board, and Hill County 4-H.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Wanda, and his aunts and uncles. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria; his daughter, Cori Meldrum (Troy); his son, Justin Hofland; five granddaughters, Jacie Meldrum, Ashley Hill (Breyer), Jenna Meldrum, Sierra Montez (Manuel), and Jayla Meldrum; three great-grandchildren; and many cherished cousins, friends, and neighbors in the north country.
A memorial service will be held on May 23rd at 2 PM at the First Christian Church in Havre.
