Pastor's Corner: Follow the Trail

It’s that lovely time of year when people are striking out on the trails. After a season of fellowshipping with mugs of hot cocoa, heavy quilts and dusty heating vents, we’re ready for some bright sunshine and a refreshing breeze. It’s time to get out and smell the fragrance of wildflower meadows where pine woods meet, to allow the sun to kiss your shoulder as a stream gurgles at your feet. In moments like these it feels like heaven truly smiles down and all seems right with the world. A day like this leaves one feeling rejuvenated and alive.

This work of restoration is what God is all about. He doesn’t want to leave us burdened under a pile of life’s dirty laundry. He doesn’t want us couped up with those sins burning holes in our soul. He wants us to come to the cool streams of His merciful love. His words in Psalm 85:10-11 beckon us to embrace His vision of refreshment. He calls us to a path where “love and faithfulness meet together, righteousness and peace kiss each other. (Where) faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven.”

Can you picture it yet?

“The Lord will indeed give what is good” (verse 12).

His Creation is good. Everything He is doing in this world is good. But He doesn’t want you to just know this. Knowing that God is good is like knowing that the high purple mountains rise above the fruited plains in the picture on my wall calendar. God doesn’t want you to just know His goodness two-dimensionally. He wants you to hit the trail, follow in His footsteps and experience His goodness. To experience the mountain stream is to dip your toe in its cool waters, to hear its gurgling chatter, to engage yourself with its movements. To experience God’s goodness is to open one’s eyes to His presence, to hear His whisper in our heart, to receive His blessings with gratitude, and to allow His righteousness to blaze trails in our lives.

His Son, Jesus Christ, is this righteous trail companion who leads the way. All we have to do is follow Him and allow Him to break trail before us, to walk and talk with Him, to climb the highs and surmount the lows of the pathway, and enjoy the wonder of the journey together.

Are you feeling it yet?

Are you ready to step out and experience His tug on your heart?

Come, taste, see, and experience that the Lord is good!
