Off the Books, On Purpose: How Summer Basketball Shapes the Season to Come

Long before the first tip-off of the winter season, the work that shapes a basketball team is already underway, often in quiet gyms, on summer weekends, in games that don't count in any standings.

That was the scene in Chester and Joplin on June 26 and 27, where more than two dozen boys and girls teams gathered for a two-day summer tournament hosted by CJI's basketball program. To a casual fan it might have looked like ordinary basketball, but summer ball runs by different rules and serves a very different purpose.

Unlike the winter schedule, summer tournaments aren't sponsored by the schools...
