What 'Cher Point?

August 16, 2017

There is plenty of football news all of a sudden this month as the NFL starts their pre season and college teams regroup for yet another season.

I notice that for fantasy football freaks there is no end to trades and the like all making the choosing of a fantasy football team more difficult.

If you are a Cowboy Fan your star running back Ezekiel Elliott has been suspended for six games for injuring his former girlfriend in three separate accidents last summer. So, you can’t use Elliott for the first six games and if more people had their way, he would have been suspended for good to send a strong message that abuse is not tolerated in the NFL!

Meanwhile, Buffalo has a new coach, Sean McDermott and he sent two starters away. They were Sammy Watkins who was traded to the Las Angeles Rams and Ronald Darby who was picked up by Philadelphia. Darby is a cornerback and Watkins is a receiver. In return the Bills picked up a receiver from Philadelphia, Jordan Matthews and a cornerback from the Rams named E. J. Gaines. You might ask why trade two good players for two other good players. The acquired players seemed to fit better into new coach McDermott’s play book.

This one boggles my mind, but just when Chicago finally got rid of Jay Cutler who has been holding them back for years, the first string quarterback went into retirement and a couple of weeks later pops out of retirement and is going to be starting for Miami. I just cannot believe such a thing. Right now Miami backup quarterback Matt Moore was slated to take over the head quarterback position but it is suspected that Cutler will get the nod over Moore.

And just when we thought that Kalispell’s Brock Osweiler was probably going into retirement, he was picked up by the Browns to hopefully be their starting quarterback. I am glad for Osweiler. He makes Montana look good. He started the preseason against the Saints last Thursday and let me see if I can see who won that game. It was a 14 to 14 tie.

At the time of this writing in the preseason Minnesota had beat Buffalo 17 to 10, Miami beat Atlanta 23 to 20, Jacksonville beat New England 31 to 24, Baltimore beat Washington 23 to 3, Denver beat Chicago 24 to 3, Cleveland had that draw and Green Bay beat Philadelphia 24 to 9.

Good weekend games to watch were Tennessee at the Jets, Dallas as the LA Rams, Oakland at Arizona, Detroit at Indianapolis and Seattle at the LA Chargers. I am anxiously awaiting the results of the Seattle game. I think that Seattle really has what it takes this season!

By the way, that old wives tale that the preseason does not count is simply not true. You can learn a lot about any given team by watching their preseason performance!

That is my story and I am sticking to it. Go Thunderbirds!
