    This spring and into the summer, the Chinook Board of Trustees began the process of addressing lower funding levels following consecutive years of failed levies that have, historically, been authorized by voters to help the school operate. The $115,000 in lost funding normally offset facility and technology related expenses.     The old A & W Root Beer stand on the west edge of Chinook was a favorite stopping place for farm families, town dwellers and travelers passing through on Highway 2.     Edith Helen (Staples) Bilger passed away peacefully on Monday, July 7, 2025 at the Care and Comfort Home in Havre, Montana. Edith was born to Ernest and Iris (Sanguins) Staples in Missoula on December 20, 1923. She attended the Polly school and graduated from Turner High School in 1941 and then went on to Northern Montana College to earn a secretarial degree.     Lawny Dean Miller, born and raised in Blaine County, passed away on July 9 at the family home west of Chinook. He was born February 14, 1959 in Great Falls the son of Sheri and Lawrence Miller. He spent one summer working for his mom's uncle, Teddy Powell, who gave him the name "Moby Dick the spouting whale" which fit him well!
