  • Wildfires in Blaine County currently under control

    Steve Edwards|Sep 13, 2017

Two wildfires have raised concerns with locals in the southwestern part of the county. While each fire had its own unique conditions, the most recent fire was on Lloyd Road south off Bose Road. That fire began late this past Saturday afternoon but was quickly extinguished. Local fire resources are still involved with monitoring the East Fork Fire, which, according to a dispatch on Sunday afternoon, is currently under control. The fire on Lloyd Road A spokesperson for Chinook-area firefighters said that fire was reported about 4pm on Saturday (9...

  • Blaine County faces another budget shortfall for 2017-18

    Steve Edwards|Sep 13, 2017

By Steve Edwards Last week the Blaine County Commissioners approved the 2017-2018 budget to operate the county. Again, the annual budget cycle for Blaine County had a familiar ring to it. Declining non-tax revenues, minimal growth in the value of taxable property, uncertainty about key annual payments from the federal government and county commissioners’ goal to keep an ‘emergency reserve’ have required more belt tightening by county departments. The result is a 2017-18 budget that is at the same overall level as last year and will again requir...

  • Bear Paw Meanderings

    Robert Lucke|Sep 13, 2017

I hate wildfires. We used to call them forest fires if you will recall but then the prairies started burning as well so the name had to be changed to wild fires. The Bear Paw fire that we have been in the midst of for a week or more was one of the worst ever but there have been others that have been almost as bad. This is the first one that there was an actual loss of cabins in Beaver Creek Park and that shows how strong and terrible that fire really was. I learned most about fires when I lived for eight years in the Flathead Valley. I saw...

    Kody Farmer|Sep 13, 2017

The Chinook Sugarbeeters dropped a 40-20 Northern Eight-man Subdivision contest to the Cascade Badgers Friday 40-20. The Badgers got on the scoreboard first midway through the opening stanza but the 'Beeters would respond on the ensuing possession. Junior James Christensen started the drive with a five yard blast and then finished it with an 11 yard power run across the goal line. Junior Trajan Hannum hooked up with junior Brendan Edwards for the conversion and the 'Beeters were on top 8-6. The...

  • What 'cher point?

    Robert Lucke|Sep 13, 2017

There were many wins and losses in football this last weekend. Great Falls Central really took the Thunderbirds to task, beating them 64 to 6. That led Central to a 3 and 0 record and a look of a winner in class C. Cascade beat Chinook and Laurel beat Havre. The Chinook score was 40 to 20 and Laurel beat Havre 42 to 21. I did not get a Harlem football score at press time but I saw that Harlem lost to Box Elder in volleyball. In the Frontier League Rocky beat Carroll 40 to 14. Talk about decisive. It was Rocky’s first win against Carroll s...
