We had a very large turnout at the annual meeting Friday. Rochelle Wohlschlager and Kathy O’Brien were elected to serve on the board again. The center has a new mission statement, “To provide identified needs of older patrons.” We will be striving to meet this goal in the incoming year. Thursday afternoon, we will have Bingo at 1 p.m. Last week, Gerry Lenhardt was the blackout winner. The LEGO Batman Movie will be the movie at 2:00 p.m. Monday July 24th. It is rated PG and is 104 minutes long. It will be the final movie for the summer. The Japanese art of flower arranging, Ikebana, continues to bloom in Chinook and northeast Montana where Ikebana has been practiced for 60 years. Allie Marie Uyehara who is originally from Chinook, brought the art back from Japan in the 1950s, sharing with the local garden club the lessons she’d learned at the famed Sogetsu School of Ikebana. Saturday and Sunday night at the Blaine County Fair is always a good time especially when you consider the Blaine County Showdown Demolition Derby takes center stage Saturday night and the ever popular Pig Wrestling concludes the fair Sunday evening. A typical warm and somewhat breezy July 4th made for good conditions for several local celebrations around Blaine County. There were family gatherings as well as more organized community-based events. In Chinook at mid-morning of the 4th, the 71st edition of the July 4th Races, put on by the VFW, did not disappoint. A week before the Blaine County Fair kicked off, two 12 by 24 feet electronic sign boards were delivered and set up at each end of Chinook on Highway 2 (believe me, they are hard to miss). The 2017 edition of the Blaine County Fair opens today and runs this Wednesday through Sunday (July 16). The Kids' Rodeo kicks thing off, literally, at 5 pm at the grandstand arena at the fairgrounds. The first weekend in July Fr. Felix Nayak celebrated mass with three congregations he served after first arriving in Montana from Orissa, India in June, 2012. In late June the oldest operating business in Chinook moved to a 'new, old location.' The "Journal," which published its first edition in May of 1890, moved south on Indiana Street to the set of buildings recently referred to as "the old Chinook Hardware."
