The Harlem Public Library is celebrating the freedom to read by observing Banned Book Week. This event highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community -librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types-in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. Come and see the display of challenged or banned books that Carly has put together and pick one out to read.
Please mark your calendars for Oct. 12 when the Friends of the Harlem Public Library will host their annual membership meeting. The salad supper will begin at 6 P.M. followed by the business meeting including the election of officers. All members as well as those interested in joining are asked to attend. Annual dues of $10 may be paid at this meeting.

“Killer Look” is a new novel by Linda Fairstein. Detective Alexandra Cooper discovers the high stakes in high fashion when designer Wolf Savage is dead in an apparent suicide days before the biggest show of his career. Savage’s daughter insists it is murder. The case becomes a media sensation as well as a race to find a killer in a world filled with fantasy and illusion.
Bestselling author Karen White brings to readers “Flight Patterns.” When Georgia goes back home to the coast of Florida after ten years she finds not much has changed except there are fewer oysters and more tourists. She’s happy to see her grandfather again, but meeting up with her estranged mother and sister is unsettling. But Georgia comes to the realization that she must try to find a way to mend fences and face the ghosts and secrets of her past.
The latest Stone Woods novel is “Smooth Operator.” Stone Barrington calls on ex-CIA operator Teddy Fay to assist when a powerful woman begs for help in an urgent matter. As Teddy digs further into a twisted mystery, circumstances escalate as he holds the fate of a young woman in his hands as well as the fate of the nation.
A new historical mystery based on actual events is “These Honored Dead” by Jonathan F. Putnam. Joshua Speed, son of a plantation owner, strikes off on his own, opening a general store in Springfield, Illinois, where he makes the acquaintance of young lawyer, Abraham Lincoln. A young orphaned girl is murdered in a nearby town and her aunt Rebecca Herriman is the prime suspect. Speed knows Herriman didn’t do it and asks Lincoln for his legal expertise. As Speed and Lincoln work to bring justice, the case starts to unravel as more bodies are discovered.
Marti Leimbach has written “Age of Consent.” June is a young widow with a thirteen-year-old daughter. June has a hopeless crush on disc jockey, Craig Kirtz, and is flattered when he strikes up a friendship. But it was her daughter, Bobbie, he was targeting. She hopes her secret life of sex, drugs, and the relationship itself would be buried in the past. But thirty years later Bobbie learns Craig’s pattern was repeated with many other girls. Now Bobbie is determined to bring Craig to justice.
Other new titles include “Bullseye” by James Patterson, “Crowned and Dangerous,” a Royal Spyness Mystery by Rhys Bowen, “The Sixth Idea” by P.J. Tracy, and “A Time of Torment” by John Connolly.
